Zaunkönig

As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.

World War II in the Atlantic was a seesaw battle of first German submersible dominance with the inappropriate title of the Wolf Pack, as there was never a central command in German U Boats, but each commander acted independently and would converge on radio alerts if a British convoy from the United States was sighted.

The Germans were far advanced as their torpedoes were almost 100 percent certain to detonate and almost 100 percent accurate in 1941 AD in the year of our Lord, as the Americans were still bouncing their torpedoes off of Japanese hardware in being defective to the end of the war.

The great dreadnought of German submersibles was radar, in being perfected in affordable radio sized sets which could be deployed in planes or ships. The U Boat would have to surface to attack or charge batteries and it was then that they were attacked and then tracked, unmercifully. Much is written about the brutality of German attacks in being so thorough, but nothing is ever noted in the English coordinated  hunting of submarines, triangulation and depth charges being exploded in over 100 in 16 hours of hunting to destroy a U Boat. by destroyers.
Coupled with airplanes circling out of firing range and then sweeping in for kills as a submersible attempted to dive, sent thousands of Germans to their deaths in a most brutal manner.

Beginning in 1943 and into 1944 though the tide again shifted to the Germans in invention, as they had before them a new torpedo. The Germans originally had a "metal computer" which was an attack table, connectd to a periscope and then to the internal guidance of a torpedo in 1941. It was all revolutionary and German U Boats could fire at multiple targets, while turning, as their system was self correcting. It was what was behind the great success of the U Boat.

Something though to counter radar appeared, beyond the metal bags and solutions placed into the water by German U boats and that was the Zaunkönig, or the Destroyer Cracker.

German industry had moved beyond visual identification of ships, and had progressed to sonic or using sound waves to pick up a ship's screws turning in the water, with the added sensitivity of these new sonic torpedoes could pick up the inner  sounds of a ship and home in on them.
These torpedoes, the G7 series or Wren,  were designed to strike the propellers and engine noise.

The G7es (T5) "Zaunkönig" ("wren") was an acoustic torpedo employed by German U-boats during World War II.

German U Boat Commander Heinze Schaeffer recorded the record of the T5 and it's use. A submersible no longer needed to surface to attack. All that was required is a German U Boat would launch it's compliment of torpedoes and the torpedoes would circle around until acquiring an enemy ship. The way the U Boat remained not a target was the U Boats went into a steep dive below 25 fathoms, where the torpedoes hunted on the surface.

Schaeffer records that the German Navy sank 70 British destroyers by 1944 AD in the year of our Lord, before the Admiralty tried to provide counter measures in the Foxer.

The Zaunkönig was countered by the introduction by the Allies of the Foxer noise maker.

The Foxer was not completely successful, as Germans evolved their torpedo systems, but the effect was that the British bullying of U Boats to their murderous ends was brought up short by the T 5 series, in a like event when American Frigates appeared in the War of 1812 AD in the year of our Lord, the Admiralty ordered British Frigates to flee before the Americans or be sunk, the British had their Destroyers fleeing before the U Boats again in keeping to port.

British Destroyer

This is one of the most remarkable stories which is not widely known in the genius of the German military inventors. Literally Americans were rubbing sticks together and the Germans were utilizing technology in how far advanced the designs were.
A great deal of this was lost as the Germans destroyed their werks to keep the Soviets from capturing the technology, but this is a story to be celebrated. The Germans fought to survive by sinking convoys and were horrifically retaliated against by British Destroyers, who had the tables turned on them and had the Her Magesty's Navy running for cover again.

The more the German armament is studied, the more the conclusion is a certainty that America did not win that war, but Germany lost it, and Germany only lost it by months on several fronts. If the German Navy simply had the T 5 in 1943, radar would have been worthless as a counter, and Germany would have cut off England in resupply from America, which would have crushed England. By 1945, the Germans had enough nuclear fuel for two nuclear devices. The fact in this which is hidden in accounts is the second bomb which was dropped on Nagasaki, used German material which the Nazi's had turned over to America as a bargaining chip. The real story expanded to Robert Oppenheimer with his German educated scientists in America, had not perfected the fuse for the nuclear bomb, and it was the addition of German scientists in this bargain who solved the American nuclear switch problem for the Hiroshima bomb.

Germany had refused to use the atomic weapons as they deemed them too inhumane.

In all of this, time and again, if Germany simply had 6 months or had unleashed forces that others deemed expendable, the Fatherland would have won the war. The Germans in many ways were too civilized in warfare and had an intellectual bias to think Continental small, instead of the American bigger is better.

This though is the story of the Destroyer Cracker which has been hidden far too long.
