There are two schools of thought in nuclear war which can be summed up by tow learned men in Joel Skoursen and Mitchell Henderson.
The Henderson paradigm is that Russia understand it has allied people in the United States, but is out to win wars and will vaporize military fronts and metropolitan areas.
The Skoursen paradigm is a first strike Russian doctrine and Russia seeks to obliterate the US military and then use the US population to blackmail the United States into servitude.

So what will be the reality?
The Lame Cherry believes when war comes, if the United States is struck, it will be in prepostioned EMP and nuclear devices, aimed at military and supporting infrastructure. The confusion would then spread to agents on the borders of the nations of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea who would then have to "secure their spheres of influence" which would sooner than later with America overwhelmed, mean an annexation of eastern Europe, the eastern Pacific and the Mideast.
It is very clear in the Putin Doctrine which states a Europe from Moscow to Dublin, and a United States held behind her ocean walls. Nuclear war does not fall into this paradigm.
Of course all great plans do not go according to plan. But the Lame Cherry will examine how to survive nuclear radiation as when things get out of hand, someone is going to start nuking the nations as revenge.
First, yes nuclear arsenals are immense. They also have never been tried in a war. Doing tests under ideal conditions is not war. There is always the reality that a percentage of munitions will not work and will not hit their target. This blog has stated for years, I hope the weapons are accurate as if they are not, then areas are going to be vaporized which have innocent people in them. That is why based on Soviet strategy, nations will preposition devices for a more certain outcome.

So there are lots of nukes. All nukes are not the same. Some are atomic, some are thermo nuclear, some are low grade, some are plutonium, some are cobalt, some are neutron.
The poison bombs are the cobalt and plutonium as the radioactivity is deadly lethal for some time. These maps are factoring in the large thermo nuclear bombs. The fact is most of the nuclear bombs in the world are not 1200 mile radius problem bombs. Those would be saved for ideal locations as in Omaha and it would make sense to use real dirty cobalt and plutonium in the surrounding areas of major bases like Wright Patterson to make movement contaminated and difficult for operations, but most MERV (multi platform warheads) are like the Americans single warheads not going to produce a 1200 mile problem, and when I say a 1200 mile problem, I do not mean everything being dead. I mean there will be wind impact and heat zones at the outlying ground zero, and then nuclear contamination There really is not a 1200 mile thermonuclear warhead, 300 miles though in minor problems which should keep you inside for a few days are a reality.
So the Minot missile silos are not going to be big nukes. There would be though tactical silo striking nukes of low yield. Again these bombs would be larger than Hiroshima by a magnitude, but they are not something that is going to obliterate all life for years.
Honestly, if I lived within 10 miles of this large missile silo field, as long as the wind was blowing away from me for a few days, as long as it was not a drought for dust, I would not care if 100 or a thousand atomic or thermonuclear typical Russian warheads went off, as the heat blast and wind would not reach my west side location, as long as they were accurate.
I honestly believe that just like artillery, there are going to be rounds that fall short and fly over target. Start crippling ICBM's and there will be a trail of nuclear explosions from the North Pole to the target area.
Russia has enough redundancy to revisit incomplete missions.
Now here is the exploration of reality.Say you live in Omaha Nebraska around Offut Air Base, or the SAC base there that George W. Bush rabbit holed to on 9 11. It is going to be nuked and be hot, big nukes to make sure. That means you are going to die right?
Not really, because those bombs are not going to detonate ground zero on you. Every mile you are away from ground zero, nature lessens by resistance the effect of any explosion. Heat is neutralize, wind is neutralized and radioactivity is reduced. Yes there will be hot zones, but if you have a basement, and like most people horde things, you pile that on top of a table, around the sides and make yourself a newspaper, clothes or even dirt cave with an entrance that turns 90 degrees because nuclear atoms can not turn corners, you have just increased your survival rate by 1000%.
You have food and water, add another 5000%. You not be Darwin in going outside for a few weeks, and you increase your suitability by 10,000 percent. Radioactivity has a half life. You do not expose yourself and that radiation will kill itself and not you. It requires patience. It requires not drinking milk or eating eggs in hot areas as those fast concentrate radioactivity, but if you can stop from being stupid, you will with your pets survive.
Let the emergency people with their Hazmat suits deal with things and things will be dealt with. They will find the hot zones, put up warnings and intelligent people will stay away. And for your sake DO NOT TAKE METALS from hot zones. Gold, silver, platinum, copper, pots and pans all get hot. They will bleed radiation for a long time and kill you.
Will some areas have fire storms? Yes. Will some have landslides to bury people in bunkers or buildings knocked down trapping idiots who built a bunker with a door that opens out? Yes. Random chance can kill lots of people, but anyone can increase their odds of living immensely by just understanding to be patient for the first two weeks, and then the first month.
Radiation is easy to figure you. The hair falls out, You bleed from the gums and rectum on sustained doses. You breathe it and absorb it and will fry you in plutonium and cobalt and you will get sick in hours. Chernobyl came of absorbing and they had tumor head kids.
For those who figured out how to survive the bio virus plague. You had good practice for unseen radiation. It is all about preparing so you will know how to deal with the situations which arise.
For those fleeing big metros for the areas that people do not want you. If you prepared, your metro will probably have less population than a shit hole like South Dakota. The rural folk will be more adept at killing you than gangsters in the city who will be shitting blood in a few days and dying. So get your head out of your ass, as frankly I would rather be in a big metro after everyone was dead as those areas were the best natural places to live before asphalt an will be lovely once nature starts the reclaim.
