As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
I never have had good anything in my life as I could not afford it. Last year we got scrap redwood from JYG to fix up the old man's Hale horse trailer and this spring I noticed a bull bowed a plank in spinning on it, so I was concerned about that all year.
Next up was JYG's gooseneck horse trailer which I thought was a buy at 500 bucks, considering what new ones cost, but the farmer never cleaned it out, so it was rusted out in the crossbeams and the side panels.
I spent a great many hours welding on that trailer, using a jack to get the planks in place again and replacing one of the short planks which had gone missing. This Keiffer built is not a good trailer. It was abused and beat to hell and when I asked the company about things, they gave me the no answer treatment, so that is another dislike about this thing.
The farmer must have had bulls or big ass Holstein cows in it, as the interior was bowed some and they broke the dividing gate which I have to repair yet, but considering I started this shit show in October and I did not have time to do everything, I was glad when I got the holes drilled in the metal and the floor back together.
Thing is I was not satisfied due to the bull incident in the other trailer and this one had a short plank which had popped loose. I did not have the money to replace the floor in the gooseneck and no time was left in the year as winter was coming and I needed it, in case of an emergency, so the Holy Ghost told me to get some pressure treated half inch plywood to add a layer to these old planks or softer redwoods and that is what I did.
In calling around, the first place said 82 bucks a sheet, but for 8 it would be 76 dollars. That is more than I had to spend or wanted to spend, so finger pressing the next phase I got 67 dollars. Still too much.
The last place I tried quoted 55 dollars for 8 sheets and that is what I got.
I got 2 1/2 star torque screws and measured away at 71 1/8 inches on the big trailer and 58 1/2 inches on the smaller one, and got to cutting. The Keiffer turned out the front was 71 inches.....so the cut was adjusted and I had to piece together the end of the trailer as was not wasting an entire sheet on 23 inches, but in the end it looks ok. Was kind of proud in I had it all squared up and it looked nice.
The Keiffer planks were in that 3/4 good yet condition with some problems. They would work just hauling like appliances around, but cattle are not appliances, nor are horses. Animals have a habit of finding weak spots in trailer floors as you have to remember a 1000 pound cow or 1500 pound horse, weighs that weight, but when it comes down to it, that weight is not spread out, it is concentrated in the size of a hoof, so that is allot of pressure at that point. Hence the bull bowing that one plank when fucking around spinning in the trailer. The answer for the real term is plywood which will spread that weight around in distributing it. 1/2 inch won't hold a fat woman but put some joists under it and 2 ton Tilly will not make the floor sag. I have the cross beams which are metal, in ok shape, the planks in 3/4 good shape and now the 1/2 inch plywood, so I'm standing on about 2 1/2 inches of wood and that will hold just about anything on it's own and with this bridge span stuff that trailers mimic, it should hold together for what I need, and for as long as I need, as I do plan for Jesus to come back, but this fix should be an almost lifetime fix as it is not like I'm going to be going Ponderosa in what is coming.
This is something each of you are going to have to come to terms with in you are going to need carts, tailers or something in your prepper movements, and sometimes all that is going to be available is shit, and you are going to have to figure out how to use the shit so it is not scattering your shit for other people to find.
One of the worst things is for an animal to break through a floor and have a foot or leg getting scraped off in the road. It is why I did this fix and while it cost more than I wanted, it was less than replacing an entire floor on old trailers that I need to get buy, until I get the spoil and the booty from these vaxers all going tits up.
