I came across an anecdote in the General Grant memoirs which bothered me as it was a “joke”, but it revealed what kind of extermination was taking place in the South.
The story was that Sherman’s men were killing every blood hound in the South as they had caught slaves. A woman had a poodle and a Union trooper caught it and was going to kill it, but the woman told him it was a poodle not a blood hound. The trooper replied, “I don’t know what it is going to grow up to be, so I’m going to kill it”.
One can see sketches of the trailing hounds the Planters had. Most of the time they were muzzled as the Nigger was valuable property. You would no more let a hound chew on a horse than you would a slave, because they were something you did not want harmed.
The fact is the slaves who ran off too much were just sold down river and that ended the hunting them down.
I did come across the story of Hero though and apparently other Southern bloodhounds who were not exterminated. They were taken north by Union troops and put on exhibit and the owners made money off of them.
There were two versions of Hero. One where he hated little dogs and one where he liked being put on people by the throat and tasting blood. The other was terrier growled at him and he skulked away.
Whatever Hero was, he was put into bear fights in the north and he got the better of the bears.
“We have seen him seize little dogs that came around his heels, shake them and cast them twenty feet from him,” the article continued. “The stoutest man he would bring to the ground by one gripe on the throat, and it was always a difficult matter to get him off if he had once tasted or smelled blood."
"There was absolutely nothing formidable about the dog but his size, which was immense. He was one of the best natured hounds whose head I ever patted, and one of the most cowardly,” recalled Rev. J.L. Burrows, D.D., who saw Hero at work. “If a fise [likely a reference to a ‘feist,’ or small terrier-derived hunting dog — Ed.] or a black and tan terrier barked at him as he stood majestic in the office door, he would tuck his tail between his legs and skulk for a safer place. I never heard that he bit anything but the bones that were thrown him, and he was quite a playfellow with the prisoners when permitted to stalk among them."
I have read that there was some kind of Cuban hound in these bloodhounds and none of them looked like the Blood Hound nor any of the hounds the South produced. They looked more like Greyhounds in the sketches.
I just do not see the point in killing off allot of dogs who were not a threat to anyone, as they had handlers who were not being mauled, so these dogs were not anything but dogs. It was as pointless in killing these dogs as it was to kill blacksmiths who made chains for Niggers to be slaves. The latter was not done, but Sherman should have been asked that as he was exterminating the Planters in the same way.
Is my problem with the Civil War. I didn’t like the thousands of horses and mules who were mistreated and died as they did not ask for it, as they sure as hell could not have run away like Negroes in Africa caught and sold by other Negroes, and now these dogs all being killed, just because they tracked property at the time and that is what the Negro was at the time, property. It was not the dog’s fault, but people can be such asstards 100% of the time.
