"Dogfights" are an interesting study when they do not match the existing norm, and no one explains why the parameters changed.
On 6 March 1972 in the Vietnam War, two Navy F 4B's off the USS Coral Sea stationed off Laos, launched for a FORCAP, Force Cap protection, of a photo reconnaissance of Quan Lang airfield.
The two F 4B's were crewed by :
Lt. James Yosemite Stillinger as pilot and Lt. (jg) Rick Olin in the lead Phantom II.
Lt. Garry Weigand and Lt (jg) William Freckleton flew as wingmen. The wing plane was nicknamed Old Nick 201.
Quan Lang by 1972 housed some 260 fighters. 95 were MIG 21's and 30 were Chicom built MIG 19's. This group targeted B 52's to harry them.
In the Vietnam War, there were not AWACS or airborne radar control of the operational theater as in later wars. In Vietnam, the theater was controlled primarily by Red Crown, which was Naval supported and this day the radar command and control was running off the USS Chicago.
This point is interesting as both F 4B's had radar malfunctions that day and still launched.
Red Crown directed the pilots to take up orbit over Brandon Bay. The recon jet almost immediately reported bandits and then more bandits, as other American pilots engaged the North Vietnamese MIGs.
Red Crown ordered the pilots to 15,000 feet on a northwest heading and assumed combat formation, 50 miles north of Quan Lang in order to intercept MIG's fleeing the Americans for their bases.
Red Crown then reported a bogey closing on the pilots at 8, then 6, and finally called Merge Pilot, in the MIG was on them. The Americans could not find the MIG, but the best radar man was on board the Chicago in Senior Chief Nowell, and he told the pilots to "look low".
Lt. Wiegand rolled his Phantom and looked down and there was the MIG, angling with his nose up, moving to attack. If the Americans had not seen this MIG, it would have come in behind the Americans and bagged both of the Phantoms and crews.
The dogfight would be the larger, less responsive F 4B in diving, climbing and pitch back, as the F 4B could not out maneuver the MIG on turns. It was a fight of the MIG nosing 20 degrees up and down in the horizontal and the F 4B maneuvering in the vertical.
There was absolutely nothing the American Stillinger could do to gain a missile lock fire. Finally Stillinger just decided to "shoot him".
Stillinger locked on and fired a missile, and it was then that the MIG pilot turned hard into the American and ceased the easy maneuvers.
The AIM 9 Sidewinder failed to destroy the MIG as the MIG had turned too hard.
Stillinger decided at that point, that he would never acquire another shot and as he could not out maneuver the pilot, he radioed Wiegand who was flying above cover to take over the hunt as Stillinger would be the decoy. Stillinger put the nose on the MIG and dove with afterburners lit and blew by the MIG.
Wiegand dove on speed and almost overflew the MIG, and at this point the MIG did a lazy roll, where Wiegand thought he had been spotted, but the MIG was apparently just checking his six and not seeing Wiegand, lit his afterburner and went in pursuit of Stillinger.
Stillinger radioed to Wiegand that he had the MIG at his 4 o'clock and to shoot.
Wiegand was dead six on the MIG's tail pipe and fired an AIM 9D which flew right and destroyed the MIG in detonation. The plane crashed and the pilot was KIA.
What took place next were 4 MIG 21's were reported by Red Crown directed by NVA Defense Control to attack the Americans. The Americans were close to bingo on fuel and left the area for return to the Coral Sea.
In the above engagement there are questions which are interesting. In the majority of MIG encounters, there were two NVA MIG's. The North Vietnamese were quite adept at tactics and luring Americans into attacks. They would perform attacks until they were shot down, then switch tactics.
Two of their most featured were to dive on Americans at speed and the other was the sneak attack as in the above MIG in coming in low and then behind.
NVA pilots had some exemplary pilots, and like all air forces had some inferior pilots. The pilot in the above engagement was very skilled in his abilities in 1972 when there a number of pilots who had already been KIA.
This pilot was skilled in tactics, abilities and combat. He was patient in the extreme and secure that he knew he could out maneuver the American F 4's. When the opportunity arose, he still maintained his composure to maneuver for a kill.
The Americans always flew in combat pairs, and yet this North Vietnamese plane understood tactics that only one American plane fired while the other covered.
What is the red light in this of something different is the MIG was alone, and NVA Defense did not vector other planes to assist, but only responded with 4 MIG's when the pilot was KIA, signally this was a special pilot.
No records show who this MIG pilot was. It would seem as in most cases, if this was a North Vietnamese ace or pilot who was so much in authority that mere comrades were not allowed to interfere with the glory of Ho Chi Minh.
Yet if this was an NVA of this type of distinction, his death would have been noted, and no records appear recording that.
This points to this MIG pilot might not have been Vietnamese, but might have been a Chicom or perhaps a Soviet on loan. That would explain the secrecy, the single flying, the arrogance against the Americans and the skill.
The discovery of Chicom officers in North Vietnam were founded. Marine Sniper Carlos Hathcock shot such an officer while sniping. It is possible even a Warsaw Pac "trainer" had been in North Vietnam to show tactics, perhaps an East German Officer, as they had experience in flying against Americans for a decade in the German theater.
This dogfight points to something out of the norm. It is concluded this was not a Vietnamese pilot. Was he Chicom or Soviet is the question. It points to a Soviet pilot.
