As a heads up, the US military has been acquiring 8 massive bombs produced by Boeing, for attack upon the Iranian nuclear facilities.
The bomb weigh 30,000 pounds and packs 5000 pounds of high explosives. This is a ratio of weight, times high speed for penetration of 200 feet of concrete. A bomb like this would be dropped from high altitude in a heavy bomber, guided as a jdam for pinpoint delivery at thousands of miles per hour, and upon penetration of a nuclear facility, would detonate.
To realize the power of a device like this, a simple plastic block of C 4 is always said capable in one pound allotments to wipe out a city block. A device like this then technically would wipe out 5000 city blocks.
A conventional iron bomb would be 2000 pounds, as they are converted to jdam status. Such devices create large craters, but this is 15 times larger.
The originals employed tank gun barrels, but this weapons is no 105 mm, but 3 feet by 15 feet delivery system. It is really a most interesting system of a solid bullet of hardened steel which must employ depleted uranium, along with a shell for the explosives which must be equally thick as buckling would occur in mass rear ratio weight pushing into a nose ploughing into concrete.
Think of a quarter wrapped in an aluminum foil tube how that would accordion and destroy the bomb affect. Fascinating to me in the reality of a metal to metal ration, along with the necessary explosive ratio......meaning one could pack this in to too tight of shell and the effects of the blast would be negated, as foot thick shrapnel is not necessary in this case once penetration takes place, instead it would require the concussion of explosion to dismantle the structure.
Once again the ratio of massive expansion of gases in a closed concrete structure would buckle steel doors and literally crumble concrete.
If one adds the depleted uranium, then one would be having a radioactive signature and mining through weapons grade uranium in a collapsed cavern would literally bury the store. Problem is though uranium warheads would be small, and unless struck would not be pulverized. In effect, Mr. Obama could destroy the structure, but rat tunnels could recover the supply again within a month, as when an Islamocommunist says "dig" the obedient dig and are replaceable if radioactive fried necessary.
In that, the Bush Cheney era nuclear designs were the correct answer as one would desire to pollute enough of an area that any miners sent in would drop like flies to Raid, effectively entombing the cache.
Added to this, if one buried the cache, destroyed the refinement process and the manufacturing stores of high speed triggers etc... The knowledge is indeed already known in Iran and literally within 2 years, from raw start, they would be up and running with like Dr. Khan warheads.
Literally the entire Iranian support system from all Shahabs, North Korean nuclear scientists, Dr. Khan warheads, production facilities and knowledge would have to be eliminated.
In analysis, this bomb does not complete this task in Boeing produced only 8 MOP's. In order to destroy Iranian capability, this would require the decapitation of the leadership, all manufacturing on all levels, and a nuclear pollution to keep any follow up from engaging.
In effect, this bomb is worthless for this mission, and it will require a several weeks bombing campaign in order to complete the task as munitions are moved and infrastructure is reactived in back up locations.
This is at best a kill shot to Iranian leadership in a bunker, but if this is the Obama mainline weapon for destroying the Iranian nuclear program, the result is going to be only burying it for rats to dig up within a month, and then an absolute response from Iran in vaporizing US cities.
Added to this, the reality of 200 dollar oil prices, Putin's engagement of forces in defending Iran and Russia speaking of nuclear engagement, this is not a correct policy for dealing with Iran, and Mr. Obama has wasted several years now in coming to this worse than doing nothing scenario.
