There are times in everyone's life that they make choices in a "lesser of two evils" resignative state of mind everyone else glosses over because it could've been worse. Thing is, when that decision affects entire countries, particularly those across large bodies of water, no one bothers to remember those who are affected though they carry large scars in bitter remembrance that can manifest decades later.
Even when the enemy of one's enemy may be an ally or a "friend" for the moment, no matter how heinous, they are not to be forgotten when the immediate danger is past. This is the mistake leaders should not make when forming alliances with other world leaders. This is what brought Israel into exile when they jumped into bed with other nations like Babylon and Assyria instead of completely relying on God. This is what entangles nations and bathes the world in fire.
"Could've been worse" doesn't make it okay.
