In the 1800's they desired it as a means to centralize power, and was a platform for such men as John C. Calhoun and Jefferson Davis, who were of that class of Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt and Birther Hussein Obama Chin political opportunists in taking advantage of their financier benefactor economic upheaval in order form a more perfect gulag.
Every democrat of that class was a warmonger and used threats of war and war to further spoil the system for their cronies domestically and internationally.
The problem for the modern democrat was after the assassination of John Kennedy, they literally had wiped out every issue they were built upon. They had re enslaved the Afroid. The had made wards of the state of the poor, so that there were no issues for them to base their existence upon, and therefore had to attack Constitutional issues as gun confiscation and transform to legal status acts of debauchery as sodomy.
