The First Republican
As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter and anti matter.
If I were to ask you, who was the first Republican of that political movement in America, I would doubt that any would have an idea of the identity of that person, and most would shrug and venture a guess that it was Abraham Lincoln.
The real Republican Party is unique, as she was not just a product of the Whigs, who were a product of the old Federalists, at odds with the Democracy party or the "Republicans of Jefferson" and later of Andrew Jackson, but it was a divergent party formed because the powers of the east in New England had begun to bow fully to the power of the Southern Secession movement and the fact that New England federalists had been against the expansion of America to the west.
It is an interesting reality, that if you really knew the reality of the first Republican, this was a gentleman who surpassed Ronald Reagan, and he is the American who was the first leader of the Republic of California.
This gentleman is thee most unique American Hero in bravery and daring, for he literally founded the American west, and he accomplished it all as the son in law, of a Jacksonian Democrat, who once was in a dual where Andrew Jackson was shot.
Yes, the legendary Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, the great Unionist of the South, who stood off the Secessionists to the last, had a son in law, named John Charles Fremont, who was the first Republican Presidential candidate.
John Fremont or Frontier Freemont was one of the prides of Senator Benton, and it is unique in all things, that Freemont, whose main guide was another Missourian, termed the Great Westerner, in the legendary Christopher Kit Carson, penetrated the haunts of the Mountain Men, into the Oregon country where they were almost slaughtered by Indians with poison arrows, before moving south with their small expedition into Mexican California, just in time to engage in leading a war for liberation of California territory from the Mexicans.
Upon inquiry, John Charles Fremont, did not just happen to be in California at an opportune time, but John Fremont with apparent full knowledge of his father in law, Senator Benton, and the legendary Andrew Jackson, who in like manner marched into Florida and wrested it from the Spanish Empire, was on an expedition to secure the American territories not touched by Lewis and Clarke decades previously, and was on scene to secure the anchor of manifest destiny in the California lands for America.
John Fremont and Kit Carson, pulled off a military movement which even outshone the daring of George Rogers Clarke when with the support of the Governor of Virginia, in Patrick Henry, marched during the Revolution into the Illinois Country and secured it from the British. Clarke would utilize the French population as allies, and Fremont would utilize the white Spanish dons, along with an increasing group of Americans in the area.
California was a remarkable and unspoiled ranch country then. Herds of horses plagued the valleys and the small group of Americans lined up for battle and in line, defeated the Mexican army there, and in one move, John Charles Fremont literally became the Viceroy of California.
That is the reality in this, the founder of American California secured that land and created a Republic where Fremont governed in a most useful way in reaching out to the Spanish dons, in their willingly becoming Americans or Republicans under the Fremont governorship.
Petty jealousies were the problem for John Fremont, as once he had secured the prize, the patricians of Washington DC soon enough, decided they knew how to rule California better and sooner than later forced John Fremont out of power in a most ungracious display.
I have made no secret of my admiration for John Fremont's Wife, and Thomas Hart Benton's Daughter in the most capable Jessie Ann Benton Fremont. In one of John Fremont's most important expeditions, it was Jessie Fremont who was key in assisting her husband against jealous governmental superiors.
Jessie Fremont was one of thee most rare of Ladies in she was the daughter of one of the most gifted politicians in America, and rose to her own place of purpose, in assisting her husband, the greatest explorer of the American west and literally the first Viceroy of the California Republic.
Jessie Fremont, is a Lady, and yet in that, her hearth was always open in thee most caring of of ways for the Great Scout of Kit Carson who was her personal and devoted friend. When Kit Carson was suffering his last due to an artery in his throat which was an aneurysm where he could die at any moment, it was at Jessie Fremont's home in Washington DC where the Great Carson stayed, a man at home in the wilderness, who stated he was rarely in a camp where coffee, sugar of flour was not missing due to deprivation.
In 1856, a new party was forming and that was the Republican Party. Her choice was the legendary American Hero, John Charles Fremont who gladly took up the challenge. This is almost Reaganesque in character in Ronald Wilson Reagan was named for democrat Woodrow Wilson, and was a democrat for the early part of his life.
John Fremont was the son in law of one of the most popular and powerful Democrats of his day. He was not part of the established eastern Whig powers who were failing, exactly as Ronald Reagan experienced.
Fremont of course, for the detriment of America, which was being led by the Neo Democrats at that time, intent on secession, and the chief political opposition was a group called "the know nothings" of the former Whigs.
Fremont would of course rise again during the Civil War as a Union officer, but again through the same jealousies and intrigue, his military efforts would be stymied as were Charles Lindbergh's by Franklin Roosevelt in World War II.
John Charles Fremont was a prototype for Ronald Reagan, and actually surpassed President Reagan. Jessie Benton Fremont was every bit the Wife, which Nancy Reagan was to her husband.
Far too often the reality of the Republican Party focuses upon Abraham Lincoln, who was a President of Union where his military was sabotaging his military efforts, and it was only Westerners who saved him.
The Republican Party was not and is not a party of the social patrician east. It is a party founded in the West, in American expansion, Constitutional, States Rights with a limited Federal governing, and as reality is fact, her godfathers were President Andrew Jackson and Senator Thomas Hart Benton in Democrats, with the stellar qualities of Jessie Benton Fremont, as shown by her husband, John Charles Fremont.
John Charles Fremont completed the circle of the American West in acquiring California. He was the union of Manifest Destiny, the common man, all in Andrew Jackson astute protection of these United States. He should be the person by which all Republicans are judged as candidates, because the candidates who attempted to glow in the shadow of Frontier Fremont from Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan became America's most outstanding Presidents......and one will note that intrigue tried to assassinate Roosevelt and Reagan, the coup against Richard Nixon, and only Eisenhower survived with the warning to be aware of the intrigues of the patrician elite.
John Charles Fremont, the first Republican Presidential Candidate, a True American.
