Before there was a Jane's Defense Weekly, there was once upon a time a man known as Fred Jane, who published Jane's Illustrated Naval Atlas which literally set off an arms race before World War I.
Mr. Jane in his publication had featured a sketch by the Italian Engineer Cuniberti of a new type of super battleship which became known under the term, the Dreadnaught. Translated the dreadful ship of the nautical sea.
The English having their entire nation dependant upon the safety of ocean travel, was the progenitor of this evolution in seapower. It as under the auspices of Admiral Fisher that this vessel emerged and was hailed as the doomsday weapon, as the possessor of it would rule the oceans and none could stand against such a massive hail of firepower.
History reveals that by the 1940's, the Bismark of Germany to the Missouri of America, that everyone had dreadnaughts, and doomsday was in every nation's hands.
There is something awe inspiring of line ships, in they were complete arts of warfare which reached their zenith and end in World War II. It was the reason of being obsolete that Franklin Roosevelt left the USS Arizona and other old battleships for the Japanese to attack at Pearl Harbor to get America involved in the coming world war, as only a direct attack could propel the American people into a war none of them wanted.
As the Kaiser noted, Admiral Fisher's super battleship was an albatrose about the English neck. As of 1900, the British ruled the seas. That rule was based on ships of war for a post American Civil War Era.
In one doomsday ship, the British had created a super weapon, but had also made their entire Navy obsolete as other nations would build these behemoths.
When the Germans turned out their first main ships, the British howled at the undertaking, but it is the reality of an arms race.
The tragedy in all of this is a reality of Britishness. Without American inventiveness, the British make collossal mistakes. They were unprepared for World War I in inferior weaponry, even though they had been plotting to genocide the Germans for 20 years.
In like years in World War II, the British when they fought the Fatherland's Bismark, the British main ship's shells bounced off the Bismark and worse yet the Bismark sank the HMS in moments.
Likewise it was American high octane fuels for fighters which the British did not have, which made a Spitfire difference in the early part of the war.
Why this has a relevancy is the same measure I noted in Gulf War I when George H. W. Bush sent in B 52's from Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean to carpet bomb Saddam Hussein.
There was no reason to do that as it was ineffective, as it was before jdams, but I recognized it was just the United States cleaning out old iron bomb inventories more easily than dismantling them.
There has been a great deal of this for the past generation, since Jimmy Carter became so rattled by Ronald Reagan in a Presidential debate that Carter blurted out that America had stealth fighters so it did not need the B 1 bomber to replace the B 52.
The ordeal of Jimmy Carter was not that he told the enemy of American technology which Carter should have been impeached over, but the reality of the intelligence community was more concerned as to who it was that told Carter of the stealth program.
Carter was a nuclear sub commander, and apparently he was kept out of the loop by the defense establishment until some leftist gave Carter the word about American capabilities in advanced warfare.
You will notice a seesaw in this between Republicans and democrats. Republicans are forever building up the cuts in the overt forces which democrats are always slashing to nothing.
The democrats like to point to welfare as their vote buying reason, but the complete reason is whisperers are always telling democrats of the new doomsday toys which are online. Only on this blog has it been noted how the Russians and Chicoms howled to Obama about space weapons. That would seem odd as you do not hear anything about these weapons, but the Russians know of them as I told you Star Wars was built, and you can glean a great deal of information about cause and effect.
For example in the 1990's, one often heard reports from south Texas in sonic booms and fast aircraft moving north to Groom Lake at Area 51. You will notice that of the George W. Bush era, that most of that seemed to disappear.
The Aurora project was part of this in a hypersonic plane being tested, but when things are no longer tested, it means that the plane has been brought online and other more advanced craft are now being tested which people are not noticing the signs of, so nothing arrives in the media.
The American last generation human fighter is the F 35. A craft I noted was all signals go in development, but under Obama the thing just started having major problems. I knew something was completely amiss in this and posted as such on World Tribune until Robert Morton got orders to not let me play there anymore.
The reason the F 35 went tits up was because the Obama Pentagon started using Chinese communist parts in production. That is a treasonous offense by this regime.
In taking this back to dreadnaughts, the time of the Naval ship is basically kaput. There still is nothing like a ship to transport huge amounts of munitions, but in an era of supersonic cruise missiles and nuclear warheads, a ship is a duck in a pond. The 21st century is an era where planes cruise in space at 50 thousand knots compared to a carrier cruising at 28 knots.
While one does not hear of space warfare, there is a reason for the confirmation, and that is the reality of not starting a space race with the Eurasians. It is a reality when Russian submarines make a grand voyage into the American Gulf undetected, that it causes alarm in DC and celebration in Moscow.......but it keeps the Eurasian building weapons to attack seapower and to attack from the sea........all the while the Americans are coming from the 3rd dimension of space at hypersonic speeds.
If a military can convince all other militaries to build planes which fly at Mach 2 and ships which run at 30 knots, using conventional and nuclear weapons, when you possess fighting platforms flying at Mach 20 and have weaponry which operates at least at Mach 20 to the speed of light, in a war, that is considered a victory on an all front war.
One should note by the way the Americans actions have been for decades, they are acting a great deal the way the British did in having their first dreadnaught in all their other weapons were instantly obsolete. The American learned the lesson from the Rosenthal treason in selling the atomic bomb plans to the Soviets, in the super weapons are all compartmentalized as are the contractors.
