Out of 1.3 billion people, China has a "viable" male soldier class of 250 million. Yes this is a large number, but all would not be fit for combat nor capable even if trained.
The Lame Cherry would point out also that China has concentrated population centers. In all out warfare Japan could nuclear pollute those regions and neutralize the Chinese military to a non invasion force or place it on equal footing of those nations China is attacking.
The Lame Cherry would not state this is easy or perhaps victorious for those attacked, but this is about tactical leverage in smaller nations defeating a larger population enemy.
If Japan, Korea, Formosa, Philippines could inflict 100 million dead on the enemy using Japanese defensive postures, they could neutralize 400 million Chinamen. Those numbers would make this too expensive for China, for China would kill itself for a Pyrrhic victory, as China would die but India and Indonesia have their 2 billion plus populations to deal with China.
