Eleanor Sherman

As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.

I have never understood, even after reading General William Tecumseh Sherman's memoirs, because he never revealed in them the absolutely horrid mistreatment he received from the War Department and the abandonment by President Lincoln, why he was so ostracized.

Yes I can speak to the fact that President Lincoln was trying to save America, and was coddling that prima dona, General George McClellan, who has more antithesis to the Western General in Grant and Sherman for their winning, than the South for their winning, but War Department was so overthrown with democrat McClellan stooges that this Ohio General from the roots of the strongest right wing families that General Sherman had a target on him, and I wonder at times if Lincoln was envious of this man.

General Sherman was an orphan, He was raised by the leading Whig politician in Thomas Ewing. Sherman would later marry Ewing's daughter, Eleanor, and in that we begin this as General Sherman had been sent west to secure Kentucky. He correctly called for 100,000 troops to win the field. McClellan was not going to have a rival army out west, after General John Charles Fremont had been sacked and General Halleck had taken command, so Sherman was called nuts.

Somewhere in this I do think General Sherman did have a mental breakdown as he once said, "I stood with Grant as he stood with me when I went nuts".

It was the plea from Ellen Sherman though written directly to the President for him to restore William Sherman's good name which found Lincoln's desk. She simply asked Lincoln to either send her husband into combat down the Mississippi or recall him to Washington to dispose of him as Lincoln saw fit.

Abraham Lincoln did absolutely nothing to set this right as McClellan had such presence with the army. This was disgraceful.

AK McClure asked about all of this at the war department. From Secretary Cameron he heard that Lincoln credited the newspaper smears that Sherman was insane. He went to the Assistant Secretary who should have known better, but he too stated that "Sherman was gone in the head".

But for the Grace of God, General Sherman was bought out of this exile by winning. He would command the expedition to break the South. He would run into trouble again though at the end of the war for coming to terms with General Joe Johnston in the Carolinas to end the fighting. Stanton and Lincoln once again chastised Sherman for interfering with their authority.

I believe part of Abraham Lincoln had a pettiness in him, because Sherman's brother was a leading Senator in the Republican Party and William was raised by a Whig party politician, and the GOP arose from the ashes of the Whig Party.  Lincoln could meddle to move and save others, but there was a reason he was not saving William Sherman.

Things do get lost in priorities for Presidents. Those who have the ear of the President, like Elon Musk are favored to hear a great deal of ideas. Others like the original Trump supporters of 2016 AD in the year of our Lord, were cut out by the people Donald Trump appointed and was victimized. Nowhere in this has Donald Trump ever looked back and remembered the people who put everything on the line for him and numbers have lost a great deal which can never be repaid.

The world moves on. General Sherman would rise to commanding the entire military of America and did write in his memoirs, of one of his detractors appealing to him for help. He replied, "You did not help me on my way up and I am not about to help you on your way down".

The moral of the story is God does make all things right in the end. It would be nice though if a President could set aside a few hours every week to look for people who have given all for him, to be helped out as no one else is going to.

A nice marble carving of Ashli Babbitt, laying slain for America on the very spot in the US Capitol where she was murdered for MAGA and all these politicians would forever have to walk around her as a reminder of their tyranny, would be at least something for the millions of people who voted for Donald Trump's victories three times and were never thanked.
