Turnips concentrate minerals from the soil and release them as they rot down. The straw of the rye would be incorporated back into the soil for increased humus and dry matter, all stopping erosion.
This is an easy fix. Some areas of great slope and wider areas would be spaced out with fruit and nut production in permanent plantings to hold the soil in windbreaks.
