As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
In the salad days of World War II, where Poles were being slaughtered, Americans slaughtered by Japanese, French and Slavs rounded up for forced labor camps, in Norway they had a different view of the world.
The Norwegian view was, "Well we can't believe Germany conquered us, so we might as well earn a living working for the Germans".
There was also another view from Norsk Hydro, which I believe the name will stump all reading this. Norsk Hydro was a massive power plant built like a castle of impenetrable mountain fortress by the Norwegians for hydro electric power. The Norwegians had built a fertilizer plant to, to profit from, and in manufacturing the stuff to make things grow, they came upon a by product called Deuterium Oxide.
No one knew what the stuff was, heavy in oxygen, and some thought it would be a cure for cancer. That was until physicists started experimenting with the atom, and theorized that this heavy water, would be of benefit to start a nuclear chain reaction.
The Americans had no time for such hair brained ideas. The Germans though, the French and British had other ideas, in their Jewish communist led scientists, and were busy importing this expensive and most rare of elements, as it took huge quantities of water and electricity to create two deuterium atoms in water, where regular water has two protium molecules.
In the end, Norwegians were the only nation making this strange fluid, and all the atomic bomb powers were wanting it, save for the United States.
As the war moved into 1942, the British decided to destroy the German source of heavy water. The Norwegians in exile though did not want their people killed as there was a huge ammonia plant on the site. So the British sent in commandos, and like all things British, the entire mission was a klusterfuck of Britons mixing with Norway.
Bomber Harris of bomber command released 3 bombers to the mission, without any tactical support like radar. The Brits though waited forever for a full moon, flew off with gliders in tow, one plane crashed, one glider broke free and one was gliding, but all three crashed, exploding guts all over the place.
The Norwegians being helpful, turned the survivors over to the Nazis, who under Hitlers directive about commandos, had them all shot......except for the ones which were poisoned by morphine or strangled will incapacitated by morphine.
Such a disaster, had the Norwegians evolving into commandos in England, and they trained to set explosives to destroy the Heavy Water plant at Norsk Hydro, because they did not want to have the plant bombed as people might get killed and the Germans would retaliate.
This though was not like the Germans were not retaliating and Norwegians dying, but Norwegians did not want Norwegians to die from acts of war.
The Norwegian commandos succeeded after a most klusterfuck months on end, of the first wave of them dropped into Norway, were starving, in eating reindeer windpipes and eye ball soup. Again, the Germans rounded up Norwegians and retaliated, but this was ok with Norwegians.
By this time, the Americans in the 8th Army Air Corp were developing a mission to bomb Norsk Hydro, which the Norwegians did not want and the British were resisting Never mind that the Americans were furious in having let British spies into their nuclear program, who were reporting to FDR's chum, Joe Stalin who butchered lots of people and raped them, because the Americans were discovering in the press, accounts of how to build the atomic bomb, and that the British and Norwegians had taken part in two failed sabotage efforts.
I know I said, the Norwegians were successful, but those bright Germans, working with Norwegians had the heavy water plant producing atomic material in a few months.
The Americans in the 100th bomb wing, went on mission in heavy cloud cover, weighing 15000 pounds more than they should have in flying, but the distance was so great, they needed extra fuel and heavy bombs.
Numbers of B 17s and B 24s never found their way above the clouds, but enough did, unescorted without fighter cover, for Norway. The flying was good, and the Americans arrived a half hour early. Early as in a half hour before lunchtime, which most of the collaborating Norwegians would be away from the plant for lunch. Instead of attacking in the surprise, the Americans some blind from clouds, and others adhering to orders, circled over the sea, which of course alerted the Germans an attack was in process, so they could light smudge pots and take other measures to hide the plant.
In the meantime, the Germans in two patrol ships, opened fire, and hit a B 17 which limped back to England, and struck another, where 10 parachutes were seen opening, dropping into the sea, the German patrols racing after them, and no word was ever heard of these 10 Americans again.
The attack went off though as the 100th, circled around and came in from the north, and without clouds, and in this impossible mission, dropped 85% of their bombs on the hydro electric plant, destroying it.
The Norwegian response was outrage. They wondered how America could "attack them". They were incensed that 23 Norwegians, men, women and children were killed by the bombing.
Again never mind this was the German nuclear bomb project, which was in process of rocket delivery to wipe out hundreds of thousands of allied peoples and would give the Germans the victory, what mattered to Norway was 23 Norwegians died. Millions would perish across Europe, but Norwegians were upset that 23 Norwegians died, while earning a living collaborating with the Nazis.
That though is the story of Norsk Hydro and the Norwegians. 23 Norwegians died. 10 Americans were murdered in never having been located, but what mattered was 23 Norwegians died.
Now the Norwegians put up monuments to the British commandos who they turned over to the Germans and were shot, but there were no monuments for the Americans who were murdered saving Norwegians from themselves.
There was a constant theme in Norway with the Norwegians, in they didn't want anyone to die, and they did not want to kill anyone. It was fortunate for Norway that Americans who were dying for Norway and the world, did not have a problem killing the enemy.
Odd in that, as the British who were the Norwegian's main allies were firebombing Germans, in men, women and children in the millions, but Norway did not have a problem with that, nor set up a monument to innocent German civilians....because only Norway had innocent Norwegian civilians, collaborating with the Nazis.
Once again, another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
Nuff Said.
