When a buffalo rifle meets a rocket scientist

It is amazing sometimes how a man dead 100 years could evoke such
loyalty from people, but there is someone I met in a book named Billy
Dixon whom I grew to be quite fond of.
Billy was as he said, "left alone in the world" at age 14. First his Mom
died in West Virginian, two years later his Dad died and when shipped
out to an Uncle in Missouri with his sister........well his sister was
dead of typhoid in a few weeks too.

Billy Dixon was alone in the world.

William Dixon had allot of character though in being kind to dumb
animals as his mother instructed him, never lied, never stole and never
cheated.
That is why when I was reading an article recently about a scientist who
was calling Billy Dixon a liar I got a bit sour.......as I knew Billy
Dixon from his own words and if this man said something it was gospel to
have happened.

The something in question happened in the panhandle of Texas at a place
called Adobe Walls during a desperate fight between a handful of Buffalo
Runners and the last of the most lethal southern Indian tribes number
1000 warriors.
During the fight the ace shot Billy Dixon shot an Indian warrior off a
horse at 1,538 yards. A mile is 1,760 yards, so you get the idea the
shot was an amazing feat of pure blessing and skill as Wimbleton shots
are at the 1000 yard range for the victors cup.

This scientist claimed in his calculations that Billy could not even
shoot that far. That the Sharps Big 50 was incapable of tossing a heavy
grain bullet that distance.
Well the scientists got their hands on a Big 50 and had their new whiz
bang tracking equipment and at the first shot the brain experts all were
exclaiming, "It just can't be!"

The first shot with a 675 grain bullet at 35 degrees went 3,245 yards
before impact with enough force yet to kill any human animal. A distance
almost double of what Bill Dixon shot.

The scientist got very quiet calling Bill Dixon a liar and the other
scientists began playing with the Sharps 59-90 finding out about a rifle
which is one of the deadliest instruments of lethal device ever blessed
into American inventiveness.

If anyone ever has the time to read Billy Dixon's autobiography which
his wife completed upon his death, it is a very interesting tale of the
world stacked against one human and the human following his mother's
good Christian advice overcoming the world...........and proving that
nice guys don't finish last........and that God is always watching out
for the Truth in His children even if they are 100 years in heaven.

Honesty matters no matter what and so does a good name. Billy Dixon and
the Big 50 still have their good name.......now proven by science.
