If I were to repeat the statement, "The sword of the Catholic church", this would puzzle all minds, with some thinking of perhaps Christ or perhaps some malevolent Jesuit sect, but those very words were uttered by Pope Leo XIII to Kaiser Wilhelm II in the years before World War I.
To give context to this, and the strange pictured meeting of the current German Chancellor in Angela Merkel with the Pater Pope, in both looking like they had a secret before she was re elected to rule Germany, one must listen to Pope Leo in his discussions with the young Wilhelm.
The Pope was keenly aware of how Catholics were treated in Germany. He praised the Emperor, but also told him that he could not give him carte blanche in how he ruled. It was then that the Pope told the Kaiser that Germany must be the sword of the Catholic church.
The Emperor was taken back by this, and mentioned that the era of the Holy Roman Empire was over and that he was but a King in reality, but that did not dissuade Pope Leo who again stressed that Germany must be the sword of the Catholic church.
The Kaiser fully understood he was viewed by Catholics in Germany, whom he treated with respect, that he was indeed Emperor as in the days of olde. In that, it is interesting that the Pope assured the Kaiser that Catholics would never be a problem for him in Germany and would remain loyal to him.
The Kaiser never had any problems with Catholics ever during his reign, especially during the great war.

The Catholics would absolutely be faithful to the Kaiser.
In this the Kaiser seemed to differentiate between the Catholic church as the "church" and Protestants in Lutherans and Reformists.

I have pointed out that a deal was reached between Angela Merkel and the Vatican for her support, as the Catholics of Germany voted in march step for her being kept leader. It will be evident in time just what it was that which was promised, but the reality is the German state is now an extension of the power of Rome.
