The Snort

It is only German teenagers dying so it does not matter.

As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.

Commander Heinz Schaeffer records in his World War II memoirs a most dynamic German achievement in their submersibles, as they were not submarines were provided for in the latter part of the war a Snort or a Schnorkel like divers used.

This great achievement was heralded as a way of protecting U Boats, but like all great inventions, there was a bit of a problem in death by enemy bombers or destroyers would have been quick as the Snort was weeks on end of torture.

See in all great things, like the German invention of refueling lines, which Schaeffer actually accomplished the first underwater refuel of a submersible with another submersible craft, was that the Snort had a baffle on it, and every time a wave came up, the baffle shut the Snort off. This may not seem like much of a deal, as water inside the engines would be worse, but the problem is when the baffle closed, the diesel engine began sucking all the oxygen out of the U Boat. Think of it this way if you had straws in your ears and someone sucking on them.
To make the situation worse, the baffles closing, constricted exhaust, which meant all that black diesel smoke poured into the compartments. In short order, the entire U Boat was covered in thick oily soot.
The men breathed it, were covered in it and slept in it. Where a U Boat always stunk of diesel and mould previously, now the entire U Boat was covered in it. It was pure torture for the crews as a U Boat when surfaced was detected by radar, an when the Germans developed passive listening for radar, the hum of the German receivers could be picked up and the allies would lock in on U Boats too.

Where the once lurking wolf pack struck terror into the heart of British shipping from America, by 1943 AD in the year of our Lord, the entire scope had changed and by 1944 AD in the year of our Lord, Admiral Donitz had ordered all U Boats to port.

It was a horrific time for German seaman as during the war they lost 40,000 crewmen. No one ever mentions that in the sinking of Liberty Ships, in  the Germans got the worst of it almost immediately. Donitz though was adamant about the deploying of U Boats as even being sunk, they made the allies to ship in convoys  and to protect those convoys. It tied up almost 2 million American and British seaman. Those tens of thousands of German live paid a most high price in buying time for the Fatherland which came too late.

It was reality for U Boats that they were expendable and allied pilots and seaman were only too happy to slaughter these men in tin fish coffins. Running underwater they could accomplish  little, and above water they were sitting ducks as if detected, the plans would circle until a dive initiated and then the planes would make a run blowing the U Boat up, and if the U Boat stayed on the surface, the destroyer convoys would soon appear and drive the U Boats in a triangular formation to be blown up if they did submerge.

Those are the realities of warfare in the propaganda of the Germans deserved it, not mentioning that the Germans were defending thier nation from their own holocaust as the Morgantheau Plan advocated taking all industry from Germany, deporting the males and making Germany one giant goat pasture for the English.

America squandered 50 thousands lives in Vietnam, and that is a large deal to Americans in building a wall with all the name memorialized on it. The Germans in submersibles had almost that many men killed and never recovered.

It is something to ponder beyond the lessening reach of propaganda where all things German were expendable and all things Anglo American were delightful.
