As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
In the world of reality, President Donald Trump is absolutely correct in mandating the end of EMALS or magnetic launch of aircraft off of carriers.
As the President stated, there have been immense cost overruns and at almost a billion dollars, and the reality of unproven technology in long term combat deployments, the reality is the United States could have some very expensive cargo ships if the EMALS does not work.
San Diego-based aeronautical systems company General Atomics was awarded a $737 million contract in 2015 to deliver an advanced arresting gear and EMALS for the second Ford-class carrier, the John F. Kennedy. In 2017, the same company got a $532 million contract for another EMALS to be used on the carrier Enterprise, the Navy's third Ford-class flattop.
Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System - Wikipedia
The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) is a type of aircraft launching system developed by General Atomics for the United States Navy. The system launches carrier-based aircraft by means of a catapult employing a linear induction motor rather than the conventional steam piston.
The problem is, is that the EMALS does not work. One glitch in the system is that Navy jets with extra fuel, can not get off the flight deck. Remember in this, that these are magnets which catapult a jet into the air. There apparently is a functional limit to the weight these magnets are set for, and when it surpasses the specs, the magnet stalls.
That is not the problem with steam as it's power is endless, to the point of it will blow out metal pipes before steam has reached it's potential.
The President is correct in America has systems which do not work and systems in aircraft which are too complicated to fly. In real war, attrition of systems is what loses a war. The Japanese had attrition in pilots and the Germans had attrition in systems, which cost them the war.Navy jets with extra fuel can't be launched off new carrier ...
Dubbed the Electromagnetic Launch System, or EMALS, it was designed to replace the steam-powered catapults that have been standard equipment on older Nimitz-class carriers for decades.
Even the Sailors do not like the EMALS, and that is the damning fact of what is wrong with this system. If the people who have to use it, do not like it, and it is reported as not any good, then the system does not belong in deployment or combat.
The president took an impromptu vote on the two systems during his speech on the Wasp, asking the service members to cheer for the one they prefer. When he called for cheers for steam, it got a noticeably louder response than the EMALS. When that system got one cheer from someone in the crowd, Trump joked that "he works for the enemy."
The United States is facing a brutal reality of a space and hypersonic flight age, of objects moving at 40,000 feet per second, that an aircraft carrier moves at 30 miles an hour. That is a very large sitting duck at almost 14 billion dollars of worthless projection of power.
Rather than use EMALS, Trump said he told the Navy to return to “goddamned steam” catapult technology to launch aircraft from newly built aircraft carriers, according to an interview he did with Time magazine.
But switching the catapult system would cost the Navy millions of dollars extra on a ship already pegged at $12.9 billion, the most expensive vessel in U.S. history, according to defense experts.ADVERTISEMENT
Trump’s raised the issue of the catapults when recounting a conversation he had with while touring the Huntington Ingalls Industries’s Newport News, Va., shipyard in early March.
“You know the catapult is quite important,” Trump told Time. “So I said ‘what is this?’ ‘Sir, this is our digital catapult system.’ He said ‘well, we’re going to this because we wanted to keep up with modern [technology].’ I said, ‘You don’t use steam anymore for catapult?’ ‘No sir.’ I said, ‘Ah, how is it working?’ ‘Sir, not good. Not good. Doesn’t have the power. You know the steam is just brutal. You see that sucker going and steam’s going all over the place, there’s planes thrown in the air.'"
So in a world of Donald Trump disappointing me constantly. This time, he is right as President, and he will probably save American lives in this one decision. The thing is, I want that money back which the Pentagon spent and those who brought EMAL around to have to pay the public back.
