I was reading recently a Marine hands on experience on how to get yourself killed by Japanese in your foxhole. The gist of it was to dig a square shallow grave. with four holes in the corners to kick hand grenades before they detonated, and somehow when you got the pukes and shits to not get it in the mud hole you are laying, while one guy sleeps and the other stays awake waiting for an enemy to bayonet you, frag you, stab you or whatever to end your days.
The Marines were right in you dug a fox hole just wide enough for two people, but a bit to easy to turn them into shallow graves. Granted the Japanese were accomplished at the game of sappers, but the canyons the Army created were advertisements for attracting fire.
I spent about 30 seconds to who the rudimentary proportions of a real fox hole. Sides should be tapered outward from the bottom, so one is not constantly in contract with dirt, as dirt is dirty, dirty is cold, dirt has crawling things in it.
This is one of the most stupid things I have ever seen online in what is called a sniper's pit.
Ok what is wrong with this is even a slant eye squatting like this, is going to get cramped and your legs will fall asleep. So one shifts, does not pay attention, draws attention and get killed. Having a Goddamn canoe on your head, fatigues you, it drops fucking bugs down your neck and other itchy stuff as you keep fucking around and jam you rifle barrel into the dirt and plug it.
It is also a wonderful Darwin idea to limit your field of vision from 360 degrees to 90 degrees.
Shoot out of this things, and that log on your head moves, you get an amplified blast in the hole from your gun and with shit flying everywhere, you will eat and RPG sooner than later.
War has changed since the dinosaur days. Now you have heat signatures, overhead drones and those green night vision to make one glow. I'm going to give you a lesson, so look at the photo below and tell me where you would dig your foxhole or sniper pit.
I'm going to delay in telling you how stupid you are, with some information which you will need.
First, if you are digging a foxhole, some fucker in a bunker has your ass exposed in a place which will get you killed. Second if you are digging a sniper pit, that same asshole is probably raping some childre at a resort while you are going to get killed.
Personally, I have only had time for Germans as they had their shit together as they did not dig foxholes or sniper pits. The German created hides or observation posts. The Scout as in Kit Carson is a far more effective method to survive, because none of you are going to be building hides to kill people. You are not going to be building hides to fight for someone else. You are going to build a hide to survive unnoticed. that is why the smart ass looking at this prairie and saying, "There ain't nothing there!", has missed the point because that is what you want. NO ONE THERE BUT YOU. Let the Chinese rape Alaska. Let the Russian bayonet Berlin. You get your ass out of harm's way and it does not mean in the middle of nowhere, but you think like the deer and the coyote that live in Los Angeles and no one sees them or ever find their bed with 5 million asstards around.
Ok in the photo below you will the letter S and numbers. Those are primary and other locations for your hide. You are hiding in plain site and following rules. The first rule is a you will notice is that you do not EVER put your position into a location where the eye naturally flows to. You want the location that the mind of every person ignores. As good as your location is, it is WORTHLESS if you do not have the ability to withdraw out of sight. Those Goddamn coyotes, mountain lions, deer and elk are masters at this shit. They use even rises in land to cut your vision and for them to hide behind as they run away.
Yes you have two primary objectives in to let the death pass by or over you, or to run away from it, knowing very well the moment you move, you are a drone or thermal image target. So if you move, you had better have a way to break up your aerial outline or your thermal signature.
OK time for the 10000 word picture.
You will notice that none of these locations are where the eye focuses. The reason for that is if any firing takes place, the return fire is going to where people think you are. You want to be where no one ever would think you were, except a trained Scout.
S 1 is the rise on the main hill. It provides height, it is just behind the crest to conceal, and it allows a venue to swallow you up from land, but not air, if you vacate your location.
S 2 is is a rise, but can be of two points, as the retreat point behind a horizon line. It avoids the natural color line which is yellow on this step centering you, as you are off to the right or left.
S 3 is the secondary hill, again on the rise. You will notice my prejudice as most right handed people for choosing a right slope instead of a left slope. The strong shoulder should be exposed and the weak protected, as this psychology comforts in the position. If I make mistakes in choosing a constant secondary slope location, the you are going to get yourself killed in making the same prejudicial mistakes. Retreat again is behind the horizon point line.
S 4 and S 5 are natural shallow water drainages which all locations exhibit. You will be amazed how many animals and hunters will travel swales like this unseen. Forward moving people will be drawn to these draws, but the military looks at them for cover to emerge to the next objective, but civilians will learn how much energy there is going down and up grades of land. These are not the premier locations as people are funneled in sight and psychology to these areas.
The best positive in this is the cuts in the land are retreat points in crawling until out of site an then using the major swale to escape. Drones again are the problem as is the reality in staying in position and being stumbled upon.
Now that you know location, you have your hide dug, the dirt remove so no signature is seen, but the sod rolled back, or the foliage preserved, so that like a blanket it returns back on top of you, and all you have is a hole to observe out of. One also has a woven grass or shrubs which BLEND IN that you look through and that you also can pull to cover up that hole if someone gets to close.
Now for one more thing, you want your blanket stout enough so if someone walks on it, they do not fall through on top of you. You do NOT want to get to that point though, because when you are choosing your hide macro location, you are noting approaches from all angles, where your eye is telling you to walk. THAT IS NOT WHERE YOU BUILD THE HIDE. You build the hide in the macro location which repulses you.
You do not want odd looking things, but like in snaring and trapping predators, there are natural obstacles which will influence animals or people to you or away from you.
For your sakes, just remember that your footy prints are not just foot prints. You move through grass and you leave a trail. To make the point, we were checking my Grandfather's place and after we got into the pickup and started backing out, I told TL, "Someone was here". I could see a trail in the cut lawn where someone had walked. Yes sun plays a part in angles, but if you are trained, you can see those types of sign. It happened to be a fuel delivery guy, but he was there. Military people and people who are naturally capable will see things in all your camo and track your ass to your hole.
OK now for the hide. I'm not into laying in an 18 inch shallow grave and shitting prone. I prefer a combination. You dig the shallow to lay in, as you can lay in comfort, with a plastic sheet under you and a bedding to lay on to keep cold from creeping and a comfortable hide is your life line.
As shelf is dug that one can sit in or shit in. You keep the dirt there to cover up your scat for scent and flies and DO NOT overlook flies giving away your position.
If you keep a plastic sheet as an underlayment of your grass cover, you will not get rained on and you will not leave visual or thermal signature for a drone to blow you to hell.
If you desire to go complete American Ranger, on your crapper end, you can build a fire pit, using dry tinder for a small fire so it does not produce visible smoke, cover it with dirt, except for two burn caves and chance the thermal signature will not light you up and keep you warm enough.
It would be lovely to have planks or flat shale rocks as your cover base to stop bullets or things that go bang, but going that far should graduate you to a dug out, which in an escape home.
Just remember in the above, that one can hide like the Russians at Stalingrad in sewers or tunnels beside buildings which areas can be dug out. It is a whole lot nicer tapping into electric lines with electric heat, water lines and sewer for nice showers and cooking.
