As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
As we are poor, and our Brier never gets any good fruit any longer, I was baited by 88 cents a pound apples in the Snowsweet as I had read about them as a Minnesota introduction after that worldwide introduction of ...I can not even think what that brittle wood apple was now which really......Honeycrisp as it was not honey at all and after the patent ran out it was Granny Smith sour in being grown places like Granny it should never have been.
I asked the checkout gal if they were good. She said they sold allot of them.
They should be called Snow mealy or Mealy sweet as these apples do not keep, but it seems that spiders like making little webs at the end of the apples to catch whatever liked mealy apples.
Minnesota used to be supreme in apples. Now they just suck. The last apple they had was Fireside which was fabulous. It supplanted all the old apples like Baldwin and Winesap as it was crisp and sweet. This Snowsweet is like a sweet, same musty version of Red Delicious and that is a Delicious which sat too long to become mealy.
I definitely will never plant this horrid apple. Here am I though saving the seeds as unlike most of these current manifestations this one has lots of pips in the seed cavities. So I am saving them, not because I like the apple, but I just have to believe that something in those seeds has to be a throwback to a good apple like Fireside or Haralson. The genetic are good for hardy apple, like Zone 3 so it is worth my time to pop them in the freezer for a month, and then peroxide towel them to see if they will sprout, and then I will go from there.
My trails with seeds from Honeycrisp and that other new one which was really good, but they wanted like a 1000 dollar fine to even get the apple trees, so piss on that, anyway, the seeds I tried from them, all did not do well, winter kill. So I will try this mongrel White apple and see how priv it is. Not like I need more apple trees, but just want to see something positive out of them before Christ returns.
I mostly like sprouting apple seeds as I enjoy that in seeing things come to life.
I was glad I did not spend any money on a tree like this as it is a real disappointment. I like apples allot, but what is out there now is really a devolution in apples. Ranks down their with McIntosh after it has been stored for a month.
I guess in how high apples are now, that it was worth the 88 cents a pound as the expensive ones are not much better.
Chinamen getting all the good fruit is what it is.
