As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
As I type this, I'm waiting for my neighbor to tow to where we live our 1972 GMC 5500 truck. I will just clarify that this is a truck. It is not a pick up. It is not a semi. It is a truck.
Today was an interesting day in Big Gym, as Chevy dude was calling yesterday, saying he had nothing he could do to find a key. So I stopped in today and I don't know if he as lying, but all he got me was the number of someone in the South who would not pick up the phone for parts number. I was smiling and thanking him, but Chevy dude.........what good is a part's number for a key, as ........I just am not going to rant on that topic as it is so lame.
I don't know if he was lying in knowing he had old keys or not, as I thought he said he had some before. It is just best to turn the page on this one as I don't think that dealership is going to last as they have few cars, fewer customers and no one in the repair shop.
So the Holy Ghost had me turn to the savior of most projects in JYG. So I roll up and ask JYG if he has old keys I can try. He says he does and as he is done cutting scrap, we can go let his dog out of prison. Poor puppy was howling when we went into the house, he would not come off the sofa until TL coaxed him. Then he went the wrong direction from where JYG was, and once we got him going, he spotted JYG and it was all tail wags and joy.
I told JYG his dog needed a psychologist as if anything ever happened to him, the dog could not cope. His puppy likes us a great deal, but there is nothing like JYG and this dog. They are the same human.
He said that as long as his dog has shots, he can take him into the hospital with him. I hope for both their sakes that JYG stays healthy and alive, as JYG thought the dog would be happy to get out. That dog was sulking and depressed being locked inside.
So TL remembered I set aside two fuse boxes that we paid JYG 10 bucks for, and he sorted through bags of keys and off we went to try and find a key for this truck.
It is a real experience putting keys in locks and having nothing happen or their getting stuck. It is even more of a shock the first time it actually turns the lock for real.
I had probably tried a dozen keys when one did turn the starter to start. It would not do ALT though which is important to get the ignition out to change to a key you can use.
That one was a real God blessed one as you had to shove the key in hard and keep it pressed in, and then it would work the tumblers.
A few dozen more keys.........and another one worked. A real cherry it worked both ways.
We set those two aside as TL looked for more square GM keys. Spoiler alert......none of the square keys worked. They were all round door keys.
I found one more key, it worked with a bit of jiggling, so we had two keys which did not match. Same deal as Two Chiefs.
The key that seemed to work had a bigger knob on the end. Great news, as back to town we went, like 10 miles in the heat to get the keys cut as I have to return them to JYG.
I only cut one key from each as the big reality is, cut keys do not always work off of keys that you had that did work. Two Chiefs is an example. The cut keys don't work very good. Thankfully we have the two originals the dealer said we could keep.
That was 4 bucks for two keys. Gal did a really good job. Four women, four employees, one was the manager who said we were the best customers, and the other 3 we give crap to and they give crap to us. Is the Brier, everyone knows everyone, just not their names.
So back we go, with root beer to sip on a hot day, as TL and I always share.
Get to the truck.....I got bit 4 times by flies the first time with two ticks. TL got bit a few more times.
So we tried the keys. The one without the knob did not cooperate the best. The one with the knob worked.......so come Saturday we will be cutting another one like that, before we give the keys back to JYG who will probably tell me to keep the one that works.
Some guy offered him 100 bucks for his pile of keys. You would be surprised how many people need keys. You would be surprised probably how few keys the auto people really put out, in how interchangeable they are.
That is the good day we had. That is about 1/3rd of the battle with Big GYM in a key to crank him over. Need a radiator which the neighbor said I could find on one of his junkers, and get a battery and we will see how things work out. I doubt the engine is stuck as lead fuel kept engines lubricated and this one has not had water running into the pistons. I expect good things to happen and am fallen in love with this big guy, as he is a two ton railroad truck. Two speed axle I think and I love playing with them. Am going to mount a 5th member or gooseneck ball in the middle of the bed as I think that will work. It has a two hitch on it.
Have not had the time to see if it has a V 6 or V 8. It seems the 6 was prevalent in a 351.........at east that is what I think I read. Would like the neighbor to be taken with this truck and suggest he had a snow plough for him as I think with chains I would do ok in clearing snow. Don't want to beat the hell out of this guy as the body in good shape. Just want something fitting, as am thinking about some kind of winch.......JYG would have suggestions on that.
Just am blessed by God as it was a good day. We did not stop at the idiot who had no answers, and JYG saved us again by God's Grace. You never know what kind of key will work and you will find out on keys just how many of them do not look the same and they still will turn on a switch.
I have to go do other things now, but why not have two vehicles to fix up, instead of just one Two Chiefs.
Nuff Said
