As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
I endeavor as a poor orphan girl to post things that you have not heard before, or else what is the point of reading here, well the Gen's don't read beyond 12 words in a text due to their illiterate minds, but all the same, there is far too much out there which is the same drivel coming out of the same propaganda machine.
One of the worst tools in this was Ken Burns in the Civil War series, which he followed up with the ludicrous "America was defined by baseball". No America was defined by Protestant Christianity before an after the Civil War, not a kid's game.
The Lame Cherry is going to take you into the fiction of the South. Yes the North has it's own better angels of our nature fiction too as no Angels ever engaged in caste genocide, as the North perpetrated in the holocaust on the South.
The Southerners were and are portrayed as genteel in nature. What I desire in this post is to show you something of the South which is chivalry, but is nothing you ever heard before in how the South waged war.
If you look at the map below, you are going to see a number of names which are not familiar. That is why Ken Burns never included them, as they are not in the propaganda. The scene of this is Yorktown, the famous battle won by George Washington for American Independence.
The South was led in the military by their best officer in Joseph Johnson. Yes you think of Robert E. Lee, but that is not who the Confederates chose. At Yorktown the Army was comprised of GW Smith, Magruder, Longstreet and DH Hill.
The North was commanded by George McClellan, and his subordinates of the corps were Keyes, Sumner and Heintzelman.
McClellan was intent on a siege warfare victory at Yorktown and wasted a month building trenches and whipping mules to haul up the big cannons. May 7th was his massive bombardment date. On the evening of May 5th, the Confederates let loose with their cannon in the middle of the night, the shells went high, brass drums were beat and fires were lit. There were so many States Rights Sympathizers, spies, press and whatever in the Union, that the Johnston knew the day he was about to be shelled, and instead of wasting forces, he simply withdrew, which was brilliant.
The North got going to assemble in the daylight and march, but the Confederates were already on the Mill Road with their infantry and on the Yorktown Road with their cavalry.
What follows, in my estimation, has the feel of the South's best battlefield general in General Longstreet.
This all started when a telegraph operator from General Heintzelman's corp was sent forward to look for Confederate dispatches at their telegraph office. The Union army found him later with his legs blown off. He died in extreme agony hours later.
A Cavalry trooper, spotted a pocket knife, got off his horse, reached down to pick it up. The knife was attached to a wire, with a friction detonator. There was nothing left of the trooper.
Soldiers were being killed, horses were being killed. The entire area of Yorktown had been minded or what was called torpedoes as they were bombs with friction fuses and that is what torpedoes were.
The North called it cowardly, but when the Negro appeared from hiding and were questioned, and claimed to know nothing about it, the great emancipator General McClellan put the Negroes to work digging out these mines.
They were marked with telegraph wires with a piece of white cotton on top.
The Confederates were not done, as the North pursued, they Southerners had dug up piles of dirt in the roads and in fields. The North thought it was more mines, which was the intent. There was nothing there but dirt, but the hours delay was crucial to the Southern withdrawal.
All of us think that IED's were the result of Russian assistance to Muslim resistance in Iraq against Americans, but Americans were engaged in IED's in 1862 AD in the year of our Lord. Most think of the Soviets in Afghanistan in toys as mines to blow up children of the Kiev Nazi in Ukraine using boobytraps against Russian civilians in Donbass, but by the knife boobytrap above.......the Southerners were the apparent source of the invention of the boobytrap.
Bushwhackers were Virginia farmers, taking their hunting rifles and shooting at the Union posts, in where that term originated from.
So the genteel South did have some backbone in making mines and boobytraps with great skill. Unlike the federal asset who was the DC Piper using bad egg timers, the South relied on humans to detonate their bombs. A detonator is nothing but a powder charge with an abrasive. You can buy those snap caps for the 4th of July as that is all they are with wire attached, so when the wire is pulled, the abrasive ignites the black powder.
If you ever watched Star Trek. Captain Kirk used potassium nitrate, sulfur and charcoal to make the same gunpowder that the South was boobytrapping Yorktown with, with successful results.

So the South did fight quite dirty in what would be called terrorism today. There is not much record of this in the tenure of Robert E. Lee, and once Stonewall Jackson was dead, the fervor for killing every Yankee abated to a civilized tone.
It is what civil war is though. The butcher which General Grant resorted to was a different type of terrorism which the South had no answer for. When a modern civil war does appear, it makes one wonder what will revisit the situation as it is already in vogue as January 6th exposed. The federal regime was framing people, beating unarmed people, gassing unarmed people, shooting unarmed people and stampeding unarmed people in order to foment a riot. In one case, a woman who died on Jan6, had drugs in her system. Someone had poisoned this woman with an overdose.
In insights into civil war, the reality is, it will not be super weapons, super explosives or super technological detonators. It will be contact mines, using the most readily available charges.
