The map below is of equal interest. Nebraska, apparently MSN has not heard of Omaha nuke base. That big complex is going to get a nuke that will reach to North Dakota. Kind of ruins ice storm Iowa too.

The Lame Cherry will advise again. Look for Zone 5 and higher numbers like 6 and 7, as you want winter to not kill you. You can garden from April to November. Coastal areas which will not be flooded by Wormwood or Moscow tidal waves are good locations. There is natural humidity there which grows crops. Get yourself allot of bug spray and be prepared to use it on your home an property.
Here is a USDA zone map and it is wrong as all maps are now wrong in the numbers. Some have Zone 7 up in North Dakota. The higher the number the warmer is the way it works. On this map they have Zone 5 for Zone 4. I will explain this. Zone 4 has winter from November to April. Sometimes snows in September and May. Zone 5 is pleasant weather from April to December and the snow does not stay around. Snow in Zone 4 falls and it stays until May.
For visuals in this map, you want to focus on what is called Zone 7 and everything south.
I still believe most should shelter in place in God's Grace as without God no prepping will work. You protect yourself from radiation which can be done and you will welcome a nuclear war as it will thin out 90% of the population in a drop zone as people will not protect themselves or have educated themselves in knowing what to do to stop the rads from hitting them.
I end this with the absolute advice. If you have never been through a winter with snow, in an emergency you do not want learn the hard way about snow and cold killing you. That means in the below map you stay the fuck out of everything labeled 3, 4 and 5.
