The introduction of import duties by the Donald Trump administration is dooming the German economy to a third year of recession, Deutsche Bank economists find.
The trade war unleashed by U.S. President Donald Trump has not only crashed stock market quotes around the world. According to economists’ forecasts, the radical measures initiated by the White House also increase the likelihood of another recession in Germany — despite assurances by future German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz of a willingness to take decisive action.
“It is more urgent than ever that Germany recovers its international competitiveness as soon as possible. This issue must become central to the coalition negotiations. We need tax cuts for companies and citizens, significant reductions in paralyzing bureaucracy, lower energy prices and stabilization of costs for the welfare system,” Mertz said on the eve of a new round of coalition talks between the CDU/CSU and the SDP, starting on Monday.
However, experts doubt that the new federal government will be able to promptly react to Washington’s decision and take emergency measures.
“In the short term, it will be difficult for the new government to mitigate an immediate trade shock,” noted economists Mark Schattenberg and Robin Winkler.
According to them, Germany’s current GDP growth forecast for 2025 (0.3%) may prove too optimistic if the tariffs introduced by the US persist for a long time.
“Overall the risks for the German economy in 2025 point to a third consecutive year of recession,” the experts concluded.
The GDP of Europe’s largest economy has already shrunk by 0.3% in 2023 and 0.2% in 2024.
“In the short term, the trade war has increased the likelihood of a full-fledged technical recession in Germany,” agreed ING chief economist Carsten Brzeski.
According to him, after a 0.2% decline in GDP in Q4 of 2024, there may be a further decline in Q1 and II of 2025. Two quarters of negative growth in a row is considered a technical recession.
“Thus, saving the whole of 2025 will no longer be possible, even if the new government takes some measures,” Brzeski emphasized.
The German Foreign Trade Association intends to lower its already modest export forecasts for the current year due to the large-scale trade conflict.
“Even if negotiations with the United States are still possible, the consequences of this war started by the States will result in falling economic growth, rising inflation and job losses in the United States and Europe,” stated association president Dirk Jandura.
