In the near future we are going to hear more in the Obama Asian Shift about Taiwan or Formosa. When Secretary James Forrestal was visiting the American command in Italy in World War II, he explained the reality about Taiwan and I post it here for you to remember.
Secretary Forrestal to the guest van and bade him good night. Forrestal could not sleep at this early hour and soon wandered down to the aides’ tent, where Bob Berenson and I were handling the mail, visit arrangements and other matters, and he began to talk to us about the war in the Pacific, about which we knew so little. Bob and I were fas¬ cinated by what he had to say. He spoke of the impact of naval and air power, of the strategic situation in the Pacific and of the fact that the Japanese still had fifty-five divisions in their home islands which had not yet been in combat. Then he asked us for a map of the Pacific, and when we produced it, he showed us the twin drives, one across the mid-Pacific and one up from the south toward the Philippines. He tapped the map at Formosa and said, “This is the whole key to the future in the Pacific. He who controls Formosa can oversee the whole coast of conti¬ nental Asia. We can never, never let this island be controlled by any power potentially hostile to us. It is from bases here that we must maintain a forward posture in a postwar Asia.” Years later I repeated this remark to Chiang
Formosa is why communist China is incessantly fucking around seizing little sand piles in the China Sea, in trying to cut off more avenues to this strategic position.
Just remember the warning. Formosa cuts Japan and the Philippines communications off and isolates Japan
Formosa contains mainland China.
