A Comet Air Compressor Comes Home

As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.

So we were standing around in JYG's living room after we had picked up a few fence posts, and discovered a tackle box with some lures in it, and a Chinaman spaghetti cooker and strainer. 5 bucks total, and as JYG has this massive surveillance system with a widescreen as large as te TV we were watching Rawhie on.......

That was the first time I saw and episode of Rawhide. The guy from Star Trek with the weird ears and played a Nazi was on there. I could not figure out how a cattle drive would be interesting week after week.

So JYG spotted a guy dumping off an air compressor. I thought it was a little bowl one and he thought it looked pretty good.  He was talking at the guy on the screen to be careful as you would not believe the shit people do to things they are throwing away. Like all the rage in the world on a piece of junk.

So we went out as I like looking at his toys that he gets in, and it was a Comet. I lit up as I have a really in bad condition Comet. I never have been able to find any information on them, although I remember my dad had one, only really nice thing he ever bought was a Comet air compressor, which I remember came from a hardware chain called Coast to Coast. They are long gone, but I found out more about the chain than anything.

Minneapolis-based Coast to Coast was, in spite of its name, primarily a midwestern chain. Three brothers, Arthur, Maurice, and Louis Melamed, founded the chain in 1928. It boomed after World War II, and at its peak, it had 1,200 stores in 26 states. Coast to Coast made it as far east as Ohio and as far west as California.

It explains why I kept finding Comet's for sale in Minnesota.

I don't know what kind of standards there are on compressors, but I know this one matched my old mans in it has JB Weld on the bottom to seal up the rusted out leaks. No one back in the day knew you had to drain the things of moisture so they all rusted out. The one I got from JYG before, I think he welded the hell out of it, and it works fine.

This one though I lit up on as it was in good shape except for the JB Weld slathered on the bottom and a new plug in it. It pumped up, held air, but had no hose, JYG tightened up the compressor air pipes and then he had to work on the O rings in the hose end, as that was leaking, and in the end it leaked a bit but not much. I just need to get a hose for it, which will be about what I paid for the Comet as JYG was kind enough to sell it to us for 20 bucks.

When I get a wire feed welder I plan on welding the holes or something in these tanks, as they are a part of Americana, even if they are not the best made, so I wonder who those Minnesotans contracted with for a brand that the compressor wheel always seemed to wobble, the one and off pressure regulator breaks the plastic caps and the tanks rust out.

Other than that, the ................oh the motors always burned out. The one we had the old man replaced it and this one had as salvage motor on it too. Otherwise they worked good. I rewired the shut off box about 8 years ago as I was getting shocks from bare wires, but they are pretty good, and considering my old man left ours outside all year this Comet held up great.

Now with the two O rings that JYG gave me, I can "fix" the one my dad had, and keep this other one inside........well they are both going inside, but I am thrilled in these things are around as I think they made this model in the 1960's which is ancient as I type this

Considering what fishing lures cost now. Although the hooks were rusted on most of the lures, which I will replace, I can say that for 25 bucks, I got more than that in lures. The electric motor is 100 bucks alone so we are doing pretty good again with JYG.

I will not mention the things we did not do so good, but I can use those tires for trailers.

Oh and honestly, this air compressor is better than anything that is out there on the market now. It needs a hose, that is it. I do not understand people who throw away things that there is nothing wrong with them other than using a wrench to tighten a joint. I would that people would throw away a 4 wheel drive pickup, and ATV and some pontoons, some farm equipment too, as I need that stuff along with a tractor.
