A President of Invention.

As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.

It is interesting how a President can advance an entire nation by his reception of invention. President Lincoln was a great deal like President Donald Trump in receiving the invention of political, diplomatic and real ideas to advance a better position for the United States. He did it with Emancipation, in foreign relations and invention.

It was Mr. Lincoln who basically drove forward the new idea of a submarine. The Navy wanted no part of that damn fool contraption. Lincoln proved right and the Monitor saved the Capitol from being bombed by the Confederate ironclad.

One of my favorites is President Lincoln in meeting with inventor Christopher M. Spencer who had been working for years in perfecting a lever action repeating firearm. Lincoln was all for it. Lincoln though was not a dunce as when Joshua Stoddard appeared with an "air torpedo" and was about to light it, the President got behind the desk for cover to make sure it was going to work. It did indeed work and missiles were born.

The President had asked Sec. of War, Edwin Stanton to come and test fire the Spencer rifle with them as the were shooting at a target by the Washington Monument. Stanton finally replied that he was too busy. Lincoln was often told people were too busy to be bothered with what the President desired.

They set up the target and in around 30 seconds, the President had fired all the rounds and hit the target. Spencer would best the President and Lincoln would note, that Spencer was younger.

The President often showed up at the War Department to find someone after hours to go shooting with him. When no regular around, he would grab some clerk. In this episode, the President was working on the Spencer rifle in the sights himself. He had whittled as wooden peg to put over the site and in 14 shots at 100 paces he had hit the target 12 times.

Lincoln was always interested in the progress of science in invention and while the government offices wanted nothing to do with the inventions or the President trying out and invention, President Lincoln proved right in changing

William Stoddard who worked in the White House made an observation of an infernal weapon,  a horrible thing for close combat in an age of sharpshooters. The weapon was an iron clad bomb and as a model  the President had cast iron likeness of this bomb which he saw the benefit of, and as war history proved, the grenade was not such an infernal weapon, but one which was horrible and it changed combat.

So from the submarine, the repeating rifle and the grenade, Abraham Lincoln was the government father of them all. We may not see the things which President Trump is progressing, but they are there and they are advancing invention.
