As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
This is the lessons section again, and this time it is about the kind of old junk tillers I look for to convert to electric motors.
You need to find tillers with a pulley that is vertical as this one is so the motor sits normal on the horizontal plane or plain.
I have 3 of these and have been collecting for years to find these. The old Wards has some kind of spindle that goes into the tiller mechanism and I have those sitting here, but do not bother with them as it will take too much engineering to accomplish.
The idea for this was from a Farm Show article someone posted long ago. I asked about this to JYG and he thought I needed a 5 hp motor which is heavy and expensive. I got a 2 HP Chinaman off Ebay for around 100 bucks........works perfectly on the original one I made. I need 3 though as then I will not have just one that might wear out.
These electric motors start all the time, no pulling a cord, no gasoline, no frustration in the least. Granted I have never converted a Troy which are wheel driven.....I have one the Tractor Whisperer got running but do not use it, but have not tried that. These old ones you have to move yourself, but the tines will pull the tiller ahead, so ..........that part is not a problem. Just be careful of the electric cord in not wrapping it into the tines.
That is your Darwin problem though, but this is the kind of tiller you want. I have a John Deere I need to convert yet. Just look for the pulley like this if you are into this kind of refurbishing.
What I like about this one, is it still has the clutch in place so I can disengage the tiller which is a helper for the Darwin Candidate.
