As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
I have not always wanted a jon boat, but of at least enough recent years I have wanted one. JYG had one but "sold" it to someone who was working for him, who never finished paying for it.........and the Gopher had an 8 foot which I wanted, but of course satan had him give it away which frustrated me more.
In this, I get pissed when I look for jon boats, sometimes john boats, sometimes duck boats as more often than not, I find some dumbass who is selling a V bottom boat and calling it a jon boat as they used it for ducks.
A jon boat is a flat bottom bottom boat with shallow draft. and not over 16 foot long. They were used in swamps for duck hunting, hence Arkansas kind of is stereotyped with this boat.
I did some looking as no one knows why they are called jon boats. The real explanation is interesting to me as it kind of originates out of the same area as German or Dutch Pennsylvania, when the English termed Germans all as Jahn Cheese which you know now as Yankee.
I will steal this thread explanation.
I originatea from the Philadelphia word "jawn", used to describe nearly anything, but especially those without a difficult or unknown name. The boats were commonly used along the Schuylkill River, and the in marsh lands that were Hog Island, now filled in and part of the Philadelphia International Airport. Coincidentally, this is where Hoagies come from, as the workera of the shipyard often ate sandwhiches packed with meat and cheese. Hog Island Sandwhiches became Hoagies. Those "jawn boats" became John Boats.
So it is an ethnic slur on the Germans who were all Jahn or John. Interesting the river which birthed that is German too.
The Schuylkill's name derives from the Dutch words schuilen, meaning to hide, and kil, meaning stream, apparently because of the "retired and hidden situation of its mouth"
I'm still working on my cheap aluminum jon boat in God to provide as the things out there now are too expensive in thousands of dollars, too big and not in the spirit of poor people needing a boat to dink around in shallow water trapping muskrats and shooting ducks or hauling booze around.
This is just more useless information for the wall, but it settles where the name came from in it is German like allot of things are in America. It is the Yank Boat.
