The advocates of claiming torture is carried out by the Americans rely upon the reality that most people have no comprehension beyond Vietnam stories or 24 fiction what "torture" is. The word conjures up the mindset of it being something reprehensible and the listener shuts down all reason.......as "I vote for Obama and I can not hear a word of fact about him".

Torture involves four phases or can involve four phases:
1. Psychological.
2. Mental.
3. Emotional.
4. Physical.
The reason for torture at base is to seperate the human persona of body and soul, to place the reality in the unsuspended limbo of fear in being separated from oneself, and at that point of helplessness, information will come spilling out.
When accomplished correctly, one can take this to Manchurian candidate levels and when one fails one will end up with a cemented structure so hardened which will never break no matter what one does.
Torture can be accomplished through mental questioning in which if one has terrified the subject sufficiently, they will babble on about things to save themselves.
Sometimes physical torture as which John McCain and the American POW's endured is not for information, as the structure of Vietnam was based within Cuban methods with the Soviet and Chicom machinations. See if one gives up, retreats into oneself, they can shut down their nervous system, so they are contained within themselves and lose the fear quality as they can not be touched. "Giving up" is accepting death, and once one does that, one can live within oneself untouched as the forces outside rage.
The danger of this shutting down is the human psyche can so withdraw that it will never come out again as it prefers the residence where it can not be touched or availed upon.
The American Indian employed sadistic torture, but not for information, as this was only for their own pleasure. The sticking of wood into the skin of a person, and then lighting them from the bottom to cook them alive is one of these tortures which is real torture.
The removal of sinews to facial nerve features in lips and eyes caused immense pain, but once again involved no extraction of information.
The Apache woman, of Vietnam communism, was such a torturer, in she would on timetable capture a young private and then break his joints every few minutes as she played games with her fellow communists.
She would cut off the eyelids, spit tobacco into the eyes to burn, and in the morning after a night of making him "sing" for the benefit of defeating moral at a US firebase, she would castrate the Soldier, tell him to run for the wires, where with dripping clots from his scrotum, expire at the wire from blood loss.

Torture must be understood in who is doing it, what is the task being accomplished and only in those protocols can it be comprehended the reason for it. A sociopath destroying an entire American society to make it in his own image, a Ted Bundy dismantling a series of women, a Dr. Mengele standing the stomach of a pregnant Jewish woman to induce labor, the Hanoi Hilton method are all forms of torture.
Torture comes in many forms without in many cases sufficient results. The sensory deprivation method creates a psychotic nature where the subject begins hearing voices and loses reality.
The isolation method in cases drives the subject insane as is typified in lost people actually running across roads to civilization or upon seeing people flee from them in terror.
All torture is for effectiveness is simply depriving the individual of their base of reality and then giving them an anchor to hold onto as their safety net to reveal all their secrets to.
Pharmaceuticals can enhance pain, but if one has a masochist which enjoys pain, one only feeds their pleasure zone and will actually kill them as the body will break down before the mental system gives up that anchor.
If the torture is what the person in psyche enjoys, the information will never be divulged as the torture will be their anchor.
This is why pain is not always effective, but the separation of personas and the anchoring in the torturer always is.
One can learn more information as a mentalist in the common magician tells of an audience than in torture. That is not to state that torture is not effective, but is to state in the means of what the controls are of the human in their body language to make torture effective, are revealed in preliminary observation and reactionary impulse to controlled stimuli.
