The Revolutionary war produced three accomplished of the Continentals, being General Washington, General Greene and Major General Anthony Wayne.
General Wayne was dubbed "Mad Anthony" by his devoted Soldiers for his absolute daring in battle. Wayne like the greatest of field Generals America ever produced from Jackson, Scott, Custer, Patton and MacArthur, actually craved battle and you could not "scare him for a damn".
He was once overrun by the British in a night raid, and in losing sixty some men, he simply regrouped and never let it happen again.
His main thrust and it was thrust, was that he loved the bayonet. He had an appreciate and a love for this weapon and it's art in warfare and disciplined his troops with it's use to the in actually checking the British regulars in battle, as his troops were that adept at hand to hand combat.
When the Hudson River was under British control at a place called Stony Point Fort, General Washington turned to his most stallwart General in Mad Anthony and suggested a nighttime attack which was insane.
General Wayne embraced the idea completely, and off he marched with his troops to attack the fort at dark.
Wayne gave specific orders to attack this fort without guns being loaded. He neither wanted his position exposed nor did he desire his troops encumbered with reloading. The only Soldiers who would be allowed to fire would be a diversion, and the rest would press on to the walls of the fort.
The 20 Soldiers in the lead were wounded or cut down to 17, but the American Continentals pressed on without firing, and as orders were for none to fall out of line, meaning cowardice, when one did, the officer of that command bayoneted him.
In the attack in two separate sides, General Wayne, himself leading the attack with a spear in hand, was shot by the British the head. Staggering and falling, he was picked up by two officers and pressed forward.
The Soldiers upon hearing Wayne was dead, simply become more fired up and pressed the attack hotter and soon enough were over the walls facing British powder burning at them and the American bayonet killing and wounding 63 of them for the complete victory and route and 3 British frigates sat on the Hudson unable to do a thing about the victory.
This is what Americans used to be.
