Niger Ambush Came After ‘Massive Intelligence Failure,’ Source Says

WASHINGTON — A senior congressional aide who has been briefed on the deaths of four U.S. servicemen in Niger says the ambush by militants stemmed in part from a "massive intelligence failure."
The Pentagon has said that 40 to 50 militants ambushed a 12-man U.S. force in Niger on Oct. 4, killing four and wounding two. The U.S. patrol was seen as routine and had been carried out nearly 30 times in the six months before the attack, the Pentagon has reported.
The aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak publicly, said the House and Senate armed services committees have questions about the scope of the U.S. mission in Niger, and whether the Pentagon is properly supporting the troops on the ground there.

There was no U.S. overhead surveillance of the mission, he said, and no American quick-reaction force available to rescue the troops if things went wrong. If it weren't for the arrival of French fighter jets, he said, things could have been much worse for the Americans.
Congress also has many unanswered questions about what happened, he said, including about the specifics of the mission that day and the accounts lawmakers have been given about the timeline of the attack and rescue.
The aide said questions are being asked about whether the U.S. soldiers were intentionally delayed in the village they were visiting. He said they began pursuing some men on motorcycles, who lured them into a complex ambush. The enemy force had "technical" vehicles — light, improvised military vehicles — and rocket-propelled grenades, the official said.
After the rescue when it became clear that one soldier was missing, "movements and actions to try and find him and bring him back were considered. They just were not postured properly [to get him]." The body of Sgt. La David Johnson was not recovered until nearly 48 hours after the Oct. 4 attack.
A Pentagon spokesperson called the claim of an intelligence failure "speculation."

Seriously in this, no Green Beret should have ever got lured into any trap. This is the kind of tactic that green troops, national guard weekend warriors get lured into in chasing terrorists into kill zones. This was a complete failure of leadership and discipline, and this was Walmart Greeters, not the John Wayne Green Berets.
We have a 12 man unit, 6 are neutralized, in 4 KIA and 2 WIA. There does not need to be any classified information in this, as this was like flushing LaVoy Finicum by the FBI to a kill zone. The motorcycles were flushed, estimate is a 4 man team took off under orders of pursuit, which SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED, and it falls to the LT in this, as there had to be an officer, a Sgt, and the enlisted.
The ambush was sprung by a bend in the road. The remaining 8 react and are drawn to the fire, where a second ambush hits them from behind. As La David Johnson was missing, he was not Rambo with knife in hand tracking terrorists. He broke and ran, after a bleeder was struck in his being wounded. The fire was too hot.
Suppressing fire was laid down, the screaming was loud, and no one apparently could count that 11 men is not 12, or they could and they boogied out of there, telling themselves that Johnson was separated and would catch up.
In retrospect as in most engagements, there was not 50 terrorists. There were probably a dozen with some young boys. They set a very good ambush which did the most damage when sprung. Their secondary ambush was ineffective after the first burst, but by that time the remaining six Green Berets who sort of held it together, were ready to ride, and let someone else who was not Walmart Greeters fix things.
This was not about fighting terrorism. This was a safe theater for training and these geniuses at the Pentagon who sign these deals for US footprint to counter Chicom, went to the hole too many times as these Walmart Greeters were running this operation

The Lame Cherry advice to Mr. President is he needs someone to clean out this political military. The fast tracking of future democratic candidates has to stop being inserted into the Special Forces. A Green Beret Sgt. should be at the earliest 30 years old, and have served two tours where actual combat took place, and in the job description America needs more squirrel hunters, coyote hunters and duck hunters as little boys as a basis for the an elite Soldier, not Walmart Greeters wearing the Pink Beret.
