This is a Lame Cherry million dollar lesson.
One of the most difficult lessons a hunting dog or home dog can learn and the consequences of it are impossible to undo when the exposure is wrong with a puppy that is naturally troubled by loud noises is the sound of gun fire.
Not everyone is me, in having a puppy exposed to them even in sleeping, so when a thunderstorm comes, you are there to calm the puppy down. Dogs once terrified are almost impossible to break.
I used to use a method of letting the dog get excited by a coon in a live trap, having TL move off with them, and then shooting the animal with a 22, which startles the puppy, but they get to come back and bark at the dead animals and it turns into fun. I have had dogs like Ruby who went almost out of control at the sight of me holding a gun, because she associated fun with a gun. Once a dog associates that fun response, they will never be gun shy.
The Holy Ghost gave me a new method, actually from the pandemic and due to Walmart. Walmart ships with large air bags to cushion the merchandise. They make a nice muffled report when popped. I have popped them with a puppy standing there, they react, but soon enough are not paying attention. Repeat lessons and the puppy could care less.
I graduate to these popped bags in playing games in finding a bird wing etc... The transfer is then almost complete. I though make sure that I never expose any dog even after to even a 22 rimfire, unless there is distance and someone to reassure them. It only takes a few times and it ends a problem before creating it.
So that is the Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter in million dollar puppy training with firearms. No firearms at first, and it works for home defense to hunting. No one does this training and it is mine from God.
