In a telling event for President Abraham Lincoln, there occurred a random chance one day when he was riding in a carriage with his son Robert. The carriage was delayed as a troop of soldiers marched past. President Lincoln in his exuberance, halfway was hanging out the door and called out, "What is it?"
His meaning was, "Which state are these soldiers from"?
Workman standing there in this delay, had one fiery red haired, probably Irishman scowl at this unknown man in the carriage asking questions and replied, "It's a regiment you damned fool!"
Lincoln rolled with mirth at the abrupt reply to his question from someone who had no idea he was castigating the President. He sat for some time though and went into deep though and then said quietly to Robert, "Sometimes I think I'm nothing but a damned old fool myself".
