As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.
If there is one item I have noticed does not hold up, that is the grill, in being around the salvage yard. As the Brier is a small community, I can figure on see a few grills each week that JYG smashes as they are really in horrid shape.
Most are propane, but people just do not take care of things, as they are always rotted out. I see just absolute messes which all relate to rich people, who buy these several hundred to over a thousand dollar grills, and they are just shit. People leave them outside, the big problem is they buy that cheap ass hamburger and sausages which is all fat content, that burns out, starts fires and makes a rotting product that just eats metal.
I watched my brother in laws, and their grills, which were propane, both rot out and collapse. The one we had, I did use fatty burgers but I had enough volcanic stone to absorb the grease and I made a point of leaving the top open so the grease would burn off and not just sit on the meta to destroy it.
I paid JYG 40 bucks for our first barrel grill. I painted it up and it is charcoal fired and I really enjoy this cooking device as it cooks so well.
In that I have picked up junked grills from JYG in I have two, no, I think I have a wood pellet smoker too and something else. The point is I got these free or cheap from JYG, and one was a pellet smoker grill and the other was propane. I have to cut a lid from a water heater for the one, and build a fire box for it to get it going, and the other one I was taking the parts off today, so I can convert it to charcoal too.
The point in this is, I am not spending the huge money on my grills. I would never spend that kind of money, especially for propane which makes food taste like petroleum. I intend to have one on Grandpas and one as a back up. The one I had over at Granpas, I want to get under cover too again as they do better under a porch roof. Things do cook better under cover too.
I will have a back up, and that is how I do things, one I use, one for spare and one just in case. That is ot to mention the big ass smoker I got fro JYG that would cook half a beef. That is a big grill.
The point in this is, if you have any sense, you can hang around a salvage yard or Craigslist and find enough of them to make a new grill with spare parts for next to nothing. If you take care of a grill, they should never wear out. It is easier than making one out of a barrel.
Smoked food is better for you and you can grill enough things in one outing to feed you for weeks. I grilled squash, turnips.......anything I care to, along with meat.
You are going to have to cook in something when the electric and propane disappears, so doing the prep is probably something you should have listened to.
