A Ruger in Colt 45

As another Lame Cherry exclusive in matter anti matter.

I came to the conclusion of wanting a 45 Colt, in Single Action Army, over the moans of the high capacity semi autos and the flip out cylinder easy loading sixes, because I need to keep things simple stupid.

The first single six I picked up was a Chiappa 22 LR and I immediately noticed there was something affectionate about this design. It had heft and was barrel heavy like a Remington 870 shotgun.
The barrel did not wander around like Smith and Wessons which were light guns. this design just felt right.

I always figured if you can not get yourself out of a deadly situation with 5 shots that 90 was not going to make a difference. It is not like I'm going to face a band of Sioux terrorists. It would be small numbers  of assailants and in that, the Colt would suffice.

Others said this gun is heavy and large for concealed carry, but this Ruger Vacarro is nothing I can not get used to, or nothing I can not hide.

I never read a great deal about thiscartridge, but after a ream of articles I started coming to appreciate what this invention was. This was a black powder cartridge, around 35 grains and 250 grain bullet. For smokeless  it runs around 7 grains and again the same 250 grain bullet. This gun moves a bullet around 800 fps, a large bullet and likes that large bullet, compared to smaller 200 grain cowboy loads.
It simply is like a buffalo rifle in a large bullet, moving slowly and it is lethal, without going to extreme pressures.

The more I read about it, the more I carry it, the more I have a deep appreciation for this John Wayne gun. It simply behaves, and when you look down that 45 caliber barrel, you think "What a gaping canyon that is". and of course criminals would notice the same huge chasm pointed at them.

I have heard that this bullet is consitent in keyholing, meaning it flies accurate, but it goes sideways on target, meaning it leaves on ragged and gaping hole. The Russians tried to do that with their 7.62 in the 1970's to make it more vicious, but never reached what the 45 Colt does naturally.

The plan is to use a kanted upside down holster in the small of my back for carrying this firearm. Getting the holster is one thing as Ruger  does not have them, and Ruger put their prices up which sucks and I do not want to spend 100 dollars for leather. I could probably make one which would accomplish the task. Inflation takes the joy out of getting things.

As time has mellowed me, this round did give me an OH SHIT moment, when we got our first box of cowboy ammo, in this is one big, blunty, imposing cartridge. This thing looks like it was designed to shoot Indian horses in the head to put terrorists a foot.  Start putting holes into anything with this hunk of lead and it is going to stop being  a threat.

So in this plague of ammo shortages, the Colt 45 is in short supply. It is a reality that for this being such a popular cowboy load, that apparently in a world of 9's and other hot loads, numbers of Americans are insulating their homes with this cartridge along the walls and will be defending themselves from all harm and danger with it.
I even saw Manny of Gaytube loading this with bird shot for snake and rat loads. From the looks of what he was doing, this load was as big as a small 410 and up close it would take the piss and vinegar out of any criminal looking to do harm. I do intend to load these snake loads as I would see value in them with heavier shot in the grouse and pheasant camp meat category.

Well that is the story and I'm sticking with it. This gun and load has grown on me and I simply am enamored with it which is the way it should be, a big hunk of gun and lead, and it just sits there weighting your house down from blowing away in hurrricane nuclear force wind.
That is what real prepping is like.

Nuff Said
