This Pat Ryder stated that a Russian pilot downed this drone. NO HE DID NOT. Russian pilots do not breathe without the central authority, meaning Vladimir Putin, had ordered this. This Reaper was flying without a transponder toward Russia. It was in the Pentagon parlance "testing Russian ability to detect Chinese weather blimps", and the Russian succeeded. It was located, and the Russian command ordered the drone knocked out of the sky.
Far from being incompetent, unsafe and unprofessional, this Russian pilot was very well trained in using his fighter interceptor to knock the back propeller off this drone to down it. There was not going to be any headlines of Russia shooting down a drone to exploit. This was textbook Russian order of battle in not leaving anything to misinterpretation.

The reason the Day After series is relevant in this, is leading up to a nuclear exchange or actual hostilities from Russia or the Soviet Union, the Russians would actually ram a foreign Navy with one of their ships. That is what took place in the Day After. The Russians were warning America that the line had been crossed.
Russia will deny this encounter as Russia has sent the message and is not seeking an escalation of the downing of their own probing of American defenses in North America. If you have large bandwidth, this is a good series to educate yourself, a the Pentagon is ignorant or is scared, over what Russia did, to understand how Russians think. You probably do not need to watch past the nukes falling and David Soul, fighting Russians in Alaska using the crisscross design defense of culverts, as the rest is mostly whining and government stupidity.
Some are questioning in this, what this all means, if Russia has changed their operational stance. The answer is yes.
