First, the Second Amendment is about killing people. That is what it is for. It is not about guns. It is about the right to kill people who violate your rights both in America and outside America in war.
A well regulated militia, means being trained in firearms and equal government support to supplying that Constitutional requirement in firearms, as the colonies used to do in buying poor Citizens firearms.
Secondly, semi auto or auto weapons are no more deadly or dangerous than other types. Given the amount of time the Joker had, anyone with a compound bow and quivers of arrows could have killed far more Batfags in that theater due to rapidity of fire and bows do not jam like semi autos, which the Joker's gun did jam and he did not know how to clear the action.

Thirdly, anyone knows that any human of normal ability, can close 15 feet on any armed human with a firearm, before they could draw the thing and fire. That means also that an AR 15 or a Glock fired, and recoil bounding the muzzle off target and subsequent human dealing with it, that anyone in that theater could have closed on the Joker and in speed, body slammed him and disarmed him with follow up of gouging eyes out or throat chop killing the red haired liberal.

It is widely known military doctrine that one does not fire full auto, as all it does is burn ammo, burns up barrels and it only affects green troops. Soldiers know there is no fire control on target and one single shot does more neutralization than hundreds.

An American Hero named Gordon Kahl of North Dakota in being murdered by the US Government after they set him up is a case study.
Gordon Kahl was a fat old man, with some military training. He was a tax protester and in those times the North Dakota state troopers decided to ambush him for the federal government to shut him up.
Mr. Kahl while under fire, opened fire with his rifle and killed the police in a not fair fight.
The federal police later tracked Mr. Kahl down in Missouri, where reports stated he had bones broken and was tortured before they murdered him in a bunker he was holed up in.
The point of the above is Gordon Kahl was a fat old man, and the police thought he was no match for them, but determination and ability out gun the armed mob every time.
The Joker was trained in video games no doubt and he was with purpose. He was in a mob which he could have done anything to them, as these wieners in a package were laying there ready to be grilled.
As stated, someone with arrows would have done more damage. Someone with a weapon which did not jam would have done more damage in aim point recovery. Someone with a pen could have done more damage, but I will not explain how, nor how to neutralize people with their hands.
The reason the Joker chose firearms psychologically is because he has intimacy issues in not wanting to get close to the human bodies. He chose firearms for an explosion of emotion like his fire bombs were for his fiery anger he did not want to unleash........
Oh yes, if James Holmes has an attorney worth salt, that attorney will sway the jury into that information that the Joker safeguarded the police in waiting for them, and he warned the police about his apartment in he did not want his rage exploding at the innocent.
Holmes chose the Batfags as they were competition with Batman, and as one has viewed evidence this mob in 99% total was running over dead and dying, whoring for camera attention, attacking each other, making jokes, not obeying police and yes, sitting in the theater waiting while others died, including children, for the movie to start.
