Catalonia has a long history in being first established as the front line against Muslim rapine in Western Europe. The Franks based this region as their line across the Pyrenees to free Europe from Muslim enslavement.

The following is a map of the Nation of Catalonia. As you can discern this nation is on the French Mediterranean border, with fully 40% of the Spanish economy and production.
In Catalonia's quest for it's legal rights, it has attempted a vote where Spanish thugs beat up the Catalonian people and attempted to stop the election and then threatened the leader with arrest and occupation by Spanish military. So much for Spanish democracy.
In this Catalonia has to face the reality as all peoples have faced the reality from the Irish against the English, the Russian against the Pole, the French against the Muslim, the American against the British, that an enslaved people can speak great words, march behind their flags, but it is worthless once the surrounding power invades the fair land and begins imprisoning, executing, raping and robbing the native Peoples.

This is what is behind the election of a new leader in Austria who is sensitive to the native peoples and understands that Austrians too are not some lower Germania, and that Germany is a people of Prussians, Bavarians, Westphalians, Saars and Saxons.
It is this that the Catalonians People have right to self determination as they were already an autonomous state doing a superb job of self rule. It is now at the point that the age old reality of El Cid appears, in one can not love the Muslim lord with your freedom or one becomes impaled. The Catalonians must now like all nations protect themselves in implementing not a standing army, but like the Swiss Canton, providing for a home defense of their nation, against Spanish rule and dictatorship.
The time to do this self protection was a year ago in preparing by arming all Citizens, and following the sound Strategy of General George Washington in gaining allies in Europe and the world, while creating a well regulated or trained militia. These are the realities of Catalonia, as Spain will appear in power. Spain will imprison, Spain will do to Catalonia what NATO did to Serbia to carve out a Muslim state in Christian lands for oil.
Catalonia must now find an El Cid to lead their 5.4 million people in a resistance which would go into Spain as DeGaulle went into Germany, for only by being strong, will Spain back down and honor the Catalan.
Bibles and Philosophy of love are grande statements in how people should treat each other, but when nations have armies, the Bibles stay at home and philosophy becomes strategy in how to break a self determinate people to make them into captives again.
The Catalans have made their choice, now it is the reality of becoming a nation, where the first responsibility of each Citizen is armed defense of their land.
The Spanish would do well to spare the rod as Europe is aflame with nationalists, and their first thuggery in Catalonia has brought only resolve. Catalonia will have support in the Basque and once that network spreads, the capital will not be an armed camp as people bring this struggle for independence to the Spanish.
It would do well for the Spanish to not make the mistake of the Americans in Abraham Lincoln in his Civil War. Instead respect Catalonia, make them a trading partner as any nation, enrich the state and it enriches Spain. Make an enemy of Catalonia and Spain will become Yugoslavia. It is better to have a Confederacy, than an armed camp around Spain for the next 100 years, as Catalonia will prevail. It will grow stronger when assailed and will become militant when the Spanish military appears.
